I received a Harris tweed jacket in the mail earlier today, from EBay. Very fast shipping, the purchase was made last Friday. It was an auction and it received no bids until about 10 hours before close, a single bid. The starting price was $1. Using my snipe guy I entered a max bid of $25 to land two seconds before closing, and since it was revealed that the other bid was for a dollar even, I wound up with the jacket for $1.25 (albeit with $13 shipping.)

It's a gorgeous piece. My others are vintage, this appears current and spanky new, from Marks & Spencer.

Below is a copy of the note I received with it.

The auction was alive for one full week, not enough time to correct an error? I see the seller has a perfect feedback rating, but only 17 sales. New at this probably. I'm feeling a wee bit bad about this. Since I was prepared to go as high as $25, should I/would you send her that? The M&S web site lists the jacket new at a very fair $345.

Above pics from EBay listing. Below, me in it...

What was the seller looking to get, at a minimum? I would consider that number and see if you and the seller could come to agreement. Is it a genuine error? Gard to say, but if you think it is and you can’t come to agreement why not return at the seller’s expense?

Although I understand (and sympathize with) the moral dilemma, the seller appears to have accepted the deal and moved on
Offering more than what you already paid could open a can of worms... what if the seller wants $100 and you're only willing to offer $25?
It could get ugly very quickly...

The seller doesn't want anything. Her note gently chides me, a subtle suggestion that maybe I took advantage of her. I didn't of course.

Often a seller will start an auction for a buck, to get attention, and often it sky rockets from there. I am not expected to know a low ball starting figure is an error. Were it a Buy If Now I would have thought something amiss, probably messaged her first to confirm price. I am out for the best deal, but stop way short of screwing folks.

My question here isn't really one of morality I guess. Just curious if you would gift her an extra twenty-five since that's what my budget for this particular auction was, and was written off even before auction's end. Thank ye all.

It is solely the sellers error. Don't give it another thought and enjoy your new jacket. ;)

Aside from the moral dilemma, that is a beautiful, classic sport jacket!
Why thank you.

Okay, thanks.

Last night saw a new six-year low, 17 below zero at 3 a.m. On nights like that I have to stay up throughout, running water through the fat pipe from the well every few hours, starting the 20 year-old truck every four, reheating the hot water bottles for the bed...and, last night reworking the Harris Tweed received yesterday, the subject of this thread.

Below, a shot of the interior. Plus a belt for the rear being made from the cuttings after shortening the jacket two and 1/2 inches (long length known prior to purchase, desired, so I could do what I'm doing).

Brown Wood Rectangle Sleeve Beige

The available fabric just a wee shy of going seam to seam - - the usual position of a cinch belt - - so the ends are arrowed and a button will appear at each end.

In my shoe collecting days, I picked up at least 6-8 Allen Edmunds from Grapevine Hill after I noticed they would start a pair at $100 and if they didn't sell, relist again at $100. Third time up, the starting bid would be $1.00 and a snipe engine would pick them up for me for almost nothing. I never felt bad. Not much demand for 8.5 EEEs.
Worked well until I mentioned their system in this forum--but by then I had quite a collection. List at a dollar can come back to bite a seller.
