I'm new to the DC area and am looking to buy one or two, mabye three, suits. I like the idea of buying made-to-measure instead of off the rack, but I'm not sure if I can afford it. And even if I can afford it, is it worth it at the lower prices? I'd like to spend up to $500-600 per suit. I just bought two Hugo Boss suits from the Barney's NY outlet in Leesburg for about $550 each but I'm concerned about the fit and alterations I need. I'm pretty much a novice at buying suits (I own one DKNY suit that I'm not enamored with) so I need a bit of help.
First, how does the quality of Hugo Boss suits stack up against other off-the-rack brands? Can I do better for $500? I can always return the suits to Barney NY in the next 30 days.
I know that fit is all important. My problem is that I'm not 100% sure what can and can't be altered. For instance, the Hugo Boss suits I bought fit well at the shoulders and collar, but the sleeves are probably almost an inch too long and the waist seems far too loose. As for slacks, the rise is a bit low and I'm afraid if I get the waist taken in a bit (and thus sitting higher on my hips) that the crotch will be rather, um, tight.
As for MTM, can I find a good shop in DC that'll do MTM for $500-600 that will give me better quality than off-the-rack? Should I maybe buy an everyday off-the-rack suit for $350-400 somewhere and then get a $700 mtm? Is there any cheap bespoke tailor in DC that's worth spending the money on? Any recommendations for a solid MTM shop in the DC area?
Lastly, I've seen some people here recommend buying suits online. Don't you really have to try on a suit before you buy it?
I appreciate any help y'all can provide. I'm both on a budget and a short schedule.
Thanks,
