I've been searching on the web for monk clothes and all I can find are medieval cloaks or Asian style. I am a beginner to the whole thing of making your own clothes.. I bought a sewing machine just recently. I'm looking to do something that I consider more stylish than what I have seen so far. I really like Alan Wallace's robe... I don't understand how this fits or how it is designed. But I do have a picture of it:

Not trying to be funny, but I thought monks, or very devout men affiliated with various religious orders, were generally seen to be wearing sackcloth garments or garments. The few real monks I have seen were wearing robes that looked like hooded burlap sacks! ;)

Sorry about the placement of text here. But I like the top piece. It's kind of like a shirt over the robes. Anyone know what that is called and or where I could find a pattern for it?

I used to have a monk's robe. It was whatever they were wearing in Germany in the sixties. It was more like a cloak with no arms but two holes in the front through which to extend one's arms if necessary. It also had a rope-ish belt that must have been secured somehow in the back. Fairly heavy cloth and a warm garment to wear in the winter. My best friend's sister gave it to me. I'm sure there's a story as to how she got it, but I'm confident I was better off not knowing...

I would think if one is sincere about becoming a Monk the obvious path would be to decide which order then seek advise and guidance from same.

With no disrespect to any true orders, I'm partial to the order that produce brandy, I find this query to fall into Monkery.
