Hi All,
i have a handful of suits that the pants are too huge in all areas except maybe the waist (only slightly oversized there). My regular alteration lady honestly admitted this is beyond her skill set before taking my $$ and botching the job. I have 5 or 6 pairs of trousers ranging from poplin, linen, seersucker, and wool that I need taken in as they are of very light use and a few have sentimental value. Most are pleated. Does anyone have a recommendation for a tailor who can alter these to fit, even if that means a full recut of the pants to taper them appropriately. I could care less if the pleats have to go (if thats even possible). I travel regularly in the area for work and am ok with someone as far north as Baltimore/Annapolis or south as Richmond if its done right.
I brought a test pair of pants, that I like but could be a throw away, to Kim's dry cleaning at the Springfield mall, but am a tad skeptical he can pull it off.
thanks

I am truly skeptical about the likelihood of success, at reasonable cost, in this venture. What you are asking for is a full dismantling of the trousers, followed by a re-cutting of the material and a remaking of the trousers. That would be very expensive, perhaps even more expensive than getting trousers made up from a bolt of cloth! Smaller adjustments without a full re-make might work, but usually that leads to balance and proportion being affected in a bad way. Unless these suits are of enormous sentimental value, I think you might be better advised to refrain from taking this path.

Years ago, and in another country where custom tailoring was very common and far less expensive (because no ready-made clothes existed), I had several of my father's classic, loose trousers from the 1950s recut and remade into relatively slimmer versions. I actually watched parts of the process with a tailor whom I had worked with closely on various projects. It is a LOT of work! I was able to have this done because the cost was much less, and I counted the tailor among my friends. I think we did three or four of these trousers, and then we both agreed that we did not want to do this again, LOL.

Hello,

I am a bespoke tailor & alterations tailor in the DMV area and concur that this is a particularly intensive alteration. However, it isn’t outside of my wheelhouse and would be more than happy to provide the alteration service you request. Whether I am able to assist you or not, I embolden you to pursue this type of procedure with a tailor that is experienced in making clothing because that the type of experience this type of alteration requires. As previously mentioned. All of my suiting and alterations benchwork is executed carefully and professionally on premise at my studio. Please check your messages in which I’ve shared my contact information with you if you’d like to talk further.
