Hello, my daughter is getting married this fall and I’d like to use this opportunity to buy my first good suit. I’ve only had a Men’s Wearhouse OTR job and I’ve lost enough weight over the past couple years that, even though it’s been altered, it is no longer viable. I’m looking for a classic style 2 button that I can use for future general purpose.

I don’t wear a suit to work daily so hard to justify $1k for a garment of occasional use. Was hoping to stay around $700 or less. I’ve seen Brooks Brothers has some models in that range but not sure if better options exist. All input appreciated!

I've been happy with Brooks 1898 suits. Mid range and I wear the Madison cut. I'm 5'10 and weigh 195. Not slim, and Madison is one of the more fully fitting suits. I have both navy and a charcoal stripe. Covers the waterfront for suit needs for a retired university administrator. Mostly weddings and funerals at this point. On sale you can usually get one for around $600.

1818, right? I have a couple of those. One Madison, one Regent. Alterations tailor made both work. 5'8" 160. Which should be more like 145.

I have a BrooksCool suit which I like a lot. Very light, very comfortable, doesn't wrinkle. Says on label fully canvassed, made in China (for the record, free trade, division of labor, and comparative advantage are the basis of all civilized life).

I wish I had discovered them before I had so many more expensive but less useful suits. Might not do in Michigan. Perfect for Georgia.

In the summer, that suit would be useful in Michigan. You probably can wear it a bigger portion of the year in Georgia.

If you are near a Nordstrom's (not Nordstrom's Rack) or Bloomingdales, you may want to try Jack Victor or Hart Schaffner and Marx. I have owned the BB 1818 as well as these two and do not find the difference in quality to be very significant. They are all half-canvassed and you can find the latter two on sale for $400 - $500. Given how frequently you will wear it, they may be better options. I actually get as many compliments in my Hart Schaffner and Marx as in a Zegna that I own.

As a reminder - it really is all about fit. A well fitting crap suit will look better than an ill fitting well made suit. Now the crap suit may not wear very well but that's a different issue. Therefore, aside from what you actually purchase please find someone who can tailor your purchase to your body well. If you are normal proportions then you simply need a good alterations tailor.

As for recommendations - my best cheap suit is a Saks Collection by Samuelsohn that I snagged on sale for around 350 dollars. They are typically 1200 to 1400 dollar suits but Saks has very nice discounts on them with regularity. Go charcoal or dark navy.

I've worn Hart Shaffener and Marx, Hunter Hague and Brooks Brothers suits most of my life and I've never been told that I didn't look pretty darned good. Instead I received a fair number of compliments regarding my business attire. Just saying.....
