I have always assumed that a dress shirt or sweater is to be worn with a sport coat or blazer.I have seen twice now people wearing a polo/izod type shirt with a sport coat. I thought it looked horrible. what is the consensus opinion?

You could wear a polo shirt under a light weight fabric sportcoat.

I wear long sleeve polo shirts and sweaters under sport coats regularly in the winter for dressy casual wear. For example, this was me leaving for a Saturday night party last year in a polo shirt and tweed jacket.

While it may not be a look that you like, my girlfriend likes it and my clothes generally fit in quite well at social gatherings. I like for my clothes to reflect a casual, relaxed attitude in such situations and prefer to leave my business, or even business casual, clothing for my work days. But that's just me. Everyone has a different personality and our clothes are probably just an extension of that. To me that's a good thing. :icon_smile:

As per Crusers post, it's an ok look. That's fine; that's his opinion. In my opinion it's not a good look. The collar of a polo shirt, IMO, never lays right when worn under a sport coat, and I never wear them. Also, I never dress in a certain way because a woman likes it. The women I've had experience with, and there have been quite a few with divergent opinions, never knew much about men's apparel.

It can be done but it's not an easy look to carry off. JFK's been dead for 45 years and other than one photo of him in a herringbone sport coat (2 button darted by the way) the next photo I see of someone looking good in that combination will be the second.

What perplexed me to even bring it up was the fact that

I think if I was attending a casual get together Id wear a sweater under my sportcoat.

I don't think it looks that bad, but I've tried it and it just didn't feel right.

It seems quite popular with golfers and such. I think it is a horrible look. As is mentioned, the collar never seems to lay right and it is incongruous to me.

Why bother with the sportcoat? If you don't care enough to throw on a proper shirt, the addition of a sportcoat/blazer is completely pointless.

I'm not at all averse to wearing a polo with a blazer or cotton poplin sport coat during the warmer months but, generally stick to OCBD's and sweaters with sport coats during cooler/cold weather.

I think a high-quality picque polo is fine with light-weight odd jackets. I have a cashmere long sleeve version that I enjoy with my Harris Tweeds. Merino is fine too. However they all need to be buttoned all the way up, unless you wear a scarf (ascot) underneath it. Otherwise leaving one or more buttons undone destroys the balance to my eye.

The exception to my rule is that I will wear a collared shirt under a LS polo sweater, either with, or without a tie.

Casual Fridays?

A buttoned up, long sleeved wool "polo" with sport coat, nice trousers, in complementary, usually earthy, colors were my casual Friday look for years. Dressy enough to do for the unexpected meeting, OK for working at the desk or walking about the division sans jacket, and not so formal as to look like you weren't even trying to fit in.

Complicating things were the commission meetings on Fridays. If you had a presentation, you put on the full body armor suit'ntie.

I'm not a fan of it either unless I am extremely casual or lazy, It seems too lax, and doesn't flatter most guys. In most of society no one thinks twice about it, I suppose.

Definitely would NOT wear it to any sort of work or business.

I'm not sure that I think that is necessarily a bad thing, especially when we are talking about casual wear. Getting dressed doesn't have to require work. In fact I think the very essence of casual dress is that it looks "casual". Obsessing over tiny details like whether the collar is laying just right is the antithesis to the whole idea of casual.

A couple of months ago one of the men's magazines, Esquire I think, asked women about what they found to be sexy about men. One response was that a man is most sexy when he isn't necessarily "put together" just perfect. I will admit to taking great care with such details when I put on a suit and tie, but we don't refer to a suit and tie as casual wear.

A consensus means that we all agree. I've done it, but if the majority voted to ban it forever I wouldn't be upset.

I went with a friend to The Prime Rib in DC, which not only still requires gentlemen to wear a tie at dinner, but will provide you with one if you show up without. He was wearing a black polo shirt and a houndstooth check coat, and they gave him a black tie. It looked good in some bizarre, don't-try-this-if-you're-not-the-Duke-of-Windsor way.
