I've decided to get a black Homburg to wear with my tuxedo. I've been wearing a grey fedora with grey gloves, cashmere scarf, and black overcoat, but I'm thinking I need to be a bit more traditional.

I'm leaning toward the "Anthony Eden" model by Lock, but shipping from their web site is forty-five pounds. Is there anywhere in the US that would have them? They say they're available in "leading shops throughout the world," but I can't find any of them. I'd prefer not to have to call London to make an enquiry.

It is my opinion that some UK retailers charge a fortune for P&P for international postage (at least double). It would be cheaper if someone in England bought the item on your behalf and sent it to you if you know someone well.

Hmmm..... £195 + £45 = £240 = $353 and that does not include duty, if any. You could probably get one custom made in the US by Art Fawcett or Dave Brown for that. Just a thought.

The 195 includes VAT, so it comes down to about 170. It would be cheaper to get while I was over there, but I don't know how I'd transport it home. And the closest I'll be any time soon is Dublin.

I'll look into the custom options, that sounds very nice.

An e-mail to the company got a prompt reply from Sue, indicating that the stockists in New York only carry the tweed hats and a style called the Traveller. More formal hats would need to be ordered online.

Neither Lock nor Herbert Johnson, nor any of the venerable miliners in London have made a decent hat in decades. They do not use very good felt and the finish tends to be slipshod, in my opinion and close obervation.

For about the same price, Gary White in Buffalo (https://www.vis-pro.com/custom_hatter/hatter.html) or any of several hat makers in the U.S. will make you a superior quality bespoke Homburg and it will actually fit and be the color of your choice. Gary specializes in getting your precise color by actually dying his felt to your order.

I would either try Optimo Chicago, or for a budget option that is likely of better quality than the Lock order an Akubra. If you're a smaller size, vintage on ebay would also be a solid option. Homburgs tend not to sell for as much, and they also tend to be lightly or never worn.

I've had a couple Akubras... they're just "OK".

I'd love to get a custom Optimo but at that price I'll take two Borsalinos. Someday I will venture to Chicago.

Like their English brethren, Borsalino no longer makes hats of great quality and hasn't done for a number of years. They certainly make hats of enormous price, but they are nowhere near the quality that any one of a number of U.S. custom hatters can achieve at a relatively modest cost.

I hear this over and over... but the reality is- it's like saying the mercedes isn't a rolls royce anymore.

My Borsalinos and a recent Stetson all take rain, snow, get brushed and look and feel like new.

Maybe they're not bespoke Optimos... but Optimo OTR start at $550 and bespoke goes WELL north of that. for 25% of that price you get a hat that, by all modern standards is quite good, if not a rolls royce.

It's like arguing how much better a Panerai is than a Rolex... we're arguing small percentages for a big difference in price.

Many years ago, my bank used to give away these funny little rain hats made of plastic that folded into a one inch by two inch flat package when you pulled on the tie ends. It was a hat and it kept the rain off and it was free...albeit sporting the bank's logo.

I cannot speak for Optimo, but I spend less than $550 for my felt fedoras which are made by Gary White. It all depends upon what one wants and one's willingness to pay.

Several of these major hat makers are still in business, so they must have a market. My point only is to explore other options in the hat market as one makes a decision on a significant purchase.

If you have the money to spend and want custom, go that route. I picked up a very nice vintage homburg on e-bay for a 10th of the cost of the Lock.

If one must go the auction route, it is worth contacting a custom hatter who will be able to clean, block, and size your purchase. Trust me, if you have never worn a hat that actually fits your own head, you are in for a treat.

Does anyone know, offhand, who makes the Homburg sold by Worth & Worth? It's about the same price as a Lock.

I'm taking all of these other names into consideration. I go to Chicago at least once a year, so having Optimo do a custom homburg is VERY tempting.

If for no other reason- just go to look... HAT PORN! Amazing what they have under one roof.
