LL Bean OCBD

I'm looking into giving the OCBD a more prominent shirt in my wardrobe, and am wondering, is the LL Bean OCBD worth the $30? Also, how does the wrinkle resistant compare with the non-treated oxford? In addition, the pink oxford on LL Bean's website looks rather dark, almost in the color popular during the 80's - is this accurate, or is the shirt actually a lighter pink?

I wear out shirts very quickly (two of my shirts bit the dust last week alone), usually by wearing the thread bare at the elbows. Thus, paying approx. $75 per shirt at BB doesn't seem to be the best use of my money, especially if LL Bean is decent (smart frugality is one of the trad cornerstones, right?). Thanks in advance for the advice!

Personally, I prefer Lands' End oxfords (specifically their Hyde Park) over L.L. Bean these days. If I'm not mistaken, all of Bean's OCBDs have fused collars, which makes them too stiff for my liking. I'd also be concerned about them looking "bubbly" over time. I can't stand non-iron shirts. They're as bad as poly-cotton blends, IMO.

Brooks Brothers OCBDs are still my favorite, although since receiving my new shirt from Mercer, I may have to reconsider that.

I'd give LE a try as well, the orginal Oxford is under $20 and available in a wide variety of colors. The Hyde Park is a bit heavier if that's what you want.

I've got the LL Bean and both Lands End versions. I prefer either of the Lands End shirts to the LL bean. The LL Bean has a closer tie space and the cuffs feel better. The downside is that the collar is fused and the buttons are really cheap. I've got 100 wearings into my original Lands End oxford and I really love everything about it. Well, it has a bit of tie space and sometimes I wish there wasn't quite so much. The fabric is very nice on both varieties of LE shirts, heavier on the Hyde Park. The fabric on the LLB shirt feels a little stiffer, I only have a dozen or so washes on it so I don't know how it will last yet.
I prefer either Lands end oxford to the LL Bean. Not the bean is a bad shirt, it's just that the LE shirts are better.

Vandy,

I think you have been here long enough to know that Familyman is the resident expert on quality and long term durability regarding LE and LL Beans oxfords. Case closed as far as I’m concerned. I’d buy what he says.
Are you really wearing your shirts threadbare? Wow?

You reminded me of something I wanted to ask when stating that you plan to add more OCBD to your wardrobe. My question is; when wearing OCBD’s with finer summer weight fabrics, do you or anyone notice it gives a bloated look where the shirt and trousers meet.

Not needing the appearance of a few extra pounds,

This is when pinpoint OCBDs come in handy. And, since Lands' End keeps coming up, it's worth noting that their shirts (even their "traditional" cut) tend to run trimmer than the typical Brooks Brothers offering, which means less excess fabric to shove into your poplins. Food for thought. :icon_smile_wink:

Many years ago, I used to by the LLB oxford cloth and the LE Hyde Park.

The Hyde Park is a tad heavier. I actually like the LL Bean shirt better though. I had bad luck with the sleaves shrinking over time on the Hyde Park. I have not bought one though in at least 10-12 years though. I had much better luck with other lands end shirts.

Bean vs. Lands end ocbd

The various ocbd shirtings offered by LandsEnd are more substantial fabric but I found them really skimpy in terms of length tails etc.
Bean-although a lesser shirt in some ways-offers a baggier fit-although still somewhat trim in comparison to Brooks (and as I hope to find out one of these days) Mercer's.-Family--if you are a 38 reg!(which I havent been in 25 years-Lands End shirts are just right and a bargain.
I recollect that the Hyde Park was a little baggier but this was late 80's.

I am subsisting on some Beans and Brooks.

Another option is buying the B2 oxfords off of e-bay, which is just people buying from the clearance center in Garland and reselling them. Then, it's only about $20 + shipping.
$20 includes their profit on eBay? Sheesh...what do they cost at the clearance center? Must be dirt cheap...maybe I should plan a pilgrimage. ;)
