I know that this is a weird question, but I'm wondering about how to wear a seersucker jacket (like the one I posted photos of here: https://askandyaboutclothes.com/community/threads/lapel-on-this-jacket-too-wide.239657/) in the SF bay area, where the days in summer can be quite warm (a seersucker jacket would be great) but the evenings are cool (a seersucker jacket would not always be warm enough).

Is it completely ridiculous to wear, for example, a cotton sweater under a seersucker jacket (which I believe could provide adequate warmth for summer evenings)? I'm excited about the seersucker jacket I found, but I want to be practical as well.

Thank you.

To me, at least, the sartorial chemistry of a sweater under a seersucker jacket just seems "off." Couldn't you wear the seersucker during the day and switch to a nice tweed in the cool of the evening?

Thanks for your response. I'm no sartorial chemist, but I can understand why you'd find it off.

In principle, yes, I could switch to something else in the evening--assuming I have access to a second jacket when I'd need it.

Stashing a second jacket in the car would be an obvious solution. However, for the past couple of years, my circumstances have been such that I can rely on public transit to get back and forth to work. In such a scenario, it would be impractical for me to carry a second coat.

The obvious answer to your question is yes...it would look (arguably) ridiculous to wear a sweater under a seersucker jacket on a cool summer evening. Assuming ambient air temps dictate, you would be better served to ditch the jacket and wear the sweater. Just a thought. ;)

Do you get that cold that you can't tolerate your commute?
I work in San Francisco. On "warm" days the temperature could exceed 70. A light jacket is perfect for these scenarios. However, as evening approaches, and if the summer fog/wind roll in, it can get cold (50's). For such a scenario, I would not be comfortable in something like a seersucker jacket.

Ultimately, this may be the best solution. I could actually just wear a slightly warmer sweater on its own in the evening.

I live in Chicago so I guess you and I have differing opinions on what qualifies as cold.

Not to discourage anyone from enjoying seersucker, but it suggests to me that climate little recommends it's wearing. I believe there are likely better choices. Some cotton jackets do very nicely layered. Canvas, or something of that ilk, for example.

I've only ever spent a few days in San Francisco, and atypically, the daytime high was around 90 each day, with the evening still being hot. And seersucker would have worked very nicely! :D

It's a fair point. The lightest weight jacket I currently have is a cotton wool blend, and I've found it too warm for certain summer days. Since it's so rare for me to find an inexpensive OTR jacket that fits well, I am inclined to keep the seersucker jacket as my lightest weight option. Something in cotton may be a good option when it's too warm for wool and too cool for seersucker.

I think a sweater can work but it has to be very thin, of a fine weave, in a light summer or pastel color and of cotton, silk, linen or some combo of those material.

A seersucker sport coat is a lightweight summer item, the sweater has to be consistent with that in look and feel.

I could see this Banana Republic sweater (in dune) or something similar working with your sport coat. https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1103419&pcid=28660&vid=1&pid=322138002

Thanks. I didn't know that sweaters made of linen existed.

L.A. weather can be similarly dynamic from high noon to evening, and I’ve found no better option than to simply switch out my seersucker for a cardigan.

I think this is a good option. Indeed, I have a few light cotton sweaters that I have worn with a seersucker jacket I own.

I think many have heard the quote about the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in S.F. Indeed, when the fog rolls in with the wind chill it feels as if the temperature has dropped 50 degrees. For those ill prepared, it is brutal.

Thanks to the summer fog and hilly geography, at mid-day it can be in the mid-50's, drizzly, damp, dark, and windy in one part of town while just a 15 minute walk away it can be in the mid-70's, sunny, dry, and calm in another. The former can feel cold if you're dressed for the latter.
