Wanted to get some fit opinions, posting this in a couple different places. This is the burgundy velvet dinner jacket I picked up from J Crew recently during the sale. I'm typically a 38R in most brands, but ordered a 39R and 40R in this, since it's their Ludlow fit.

39R:

40R:

39R fits a bit better in the chest (slimmer), but I guess I want extra sets of eyes on it to make sure it fits okay everywhere else

Worth noting- I actually have last year's navy in size 40R (it was the only size available), and that has worked fine. Since I had the option this year to try a 39R, I went ahead and decided to try both. Both technically fit, I'm just looking for the better fit between the two.

I can't really tell that the button is pulling on the 39 (which would be my concern from the front.) I probably would go with the 40 since they look about the same and you have been happy with a 40 in the same jacket. Assuming you haven't lost weight in the interim and the shoulders fit well across the back then stick with a 40.

Without a side view and a back view, I can't see any appreciable difference.

Suggestion: Make a two-part You Tube video. In the first part, you're in a bar brawl wearing the 39R; in the second, the action has moved to the parking lot, but now you're wearing the 40R.

A 360-degree look at you in action--that's what I need to make the call.

I like the 39R fit a bit better as the 40R seems to have a touch more material in the chest area resulting in a less clean line on the side of your rib cage. It could just be the way you're holding your arms, but I see the "skirt" also fits marginally "cleaner" in the 39R. Hence, the fit just looks a touch neater in the 39R. Surprisingly, I don't see any real difference in the shoulders. If you bought the 40R, I'd have the tailor create the silhouette of the 39R - hence, my preference for the 39R.

Something similar to the bouillabaisse scene in Our Man Flint ?? ;)

39 looks OK, but the 40 looks better. And it may also be that the 40 came out a bit better. Assuming it's RTW, even identical jackets are rarely entirely identical.

Edit: And for some reason, the 40 also gives you a bit better proportion.

Agreed 100%. Drapes cleaner and the quarters have a better shape to them.

New pics. I think I've made a decision, but I want to hear feedback to see if it matches what I was thinking.

39R
Outerwear Dress shirt Neck Fashion Sleeve
Jeans Outerwear Shoulder Leg Textile
Jeans Trousers Outerwear Leg Neck

40R
Jeans Outerwear Dress shirt Sleeve Standing
Outerwear Sleeve Textile Collar Street fashion
Jeans Outerwear Shoulder Neck Waist

Interestingly, these were the measurements:

39R:
Shoulder- 18"
Chest- 20.5"
Length (BOC)- 30"

40R:
Shoulder- 18.5"
Chest- 21"
Length- 29.75" (!)

My 40R from last year:
Shoulder- 18"
Chest- 21"
Length- 30"

Admittedly, whichever I keep will need to be pressed

Hm.

How does it feel when you raise your arms? Both look tight in the upper back and lower back, and upper sleeves.

It reminds me of my first suit I bought, I now loathe that thing.
Not tight at all, actually- the pic of the back surprised me when I saw it. Both need to be pressed after being folded in the box, so I imagine that's part of it

About as much a toss up as you could get, but with the new back views I'd put my vote in for the 40r, but would defer if you found the 39 more comfortable (which I'd kinda doubt). Echo the earlier comments re button stance on the 39, although on close inspection I think it's more an overall gestalt than a discrete measurement issue, but regardless I do prefer the 40. Mighty impressed that you could get away without altering the sleeves if you choose, congrats. On both jackets, I'm also surprised that OTR they (JC) come with that much waist suppression built in; I think it works for you, but it's just surprising to me. Last, I think the 40 works better with your overall proportions. Nice purchase!

Definitely the 40R, though even that looks as if the shoulder could be a tad broader.

You've got a roll below the collar in back, though that may be caused by your posture. Just about everyone stand much more erect for photos. If not, and you want to fix, a good alterations tailor can lower the collar for you.

I definitely wouldn't want the jacket either snugger or shorter. Actually wouldn't mind seeing it slightly longer.
