What in the world are J.Press doing here?
I'm sure most of you received this email today about a new collaboration between J.Press and Wooden Sleepers. Basically, a thrifter is selling old JP jackets through JP, but with some insane alterations to justify the mark up. If you haven't already, I recommend checking out the sport coats for sale. I cant think of a time when JP sold a darted, double vented, four sleeve buttoned, slanted pocket sport coat. And if they have, I've never seen one on eBay - they've managed to find 6x in the same size! I think they may have just found an old tweed jacket and had some left over JP labels from the 80s sewn in.

The first jacket I pulled up said it had a single hook vent and was a classic three roll two. The photos said otherwise, a two button with side vents.

Between these bizarre offerings and their Murray's Nantucket reds at fifty percent markup, you have to scratch your head and wonder what they are doing (or trying to do). I am waiting for them to offer a reconditioned Honda 50 with a tweed seat or an old bamboo fly rod with a snuff suede grip and silk repp windings.

I've got a couple ancient bamboo rods in various stages of disrepair for this project. Hmm...let's see...I think $1000 apiece is fair. They can flip them for $3500.

Great question.

My experience with Wooden Sleepers and Brian Davis is that he's more of a curator/finder if you're looking for a particular item. My impression of most thrifters is they don't seek out one item, they just look for good finds.

Personally, I don't give a damn for the 'hunt' in thrifting on eBay or in person. It's a waste of my time and energy.

WS took that out of the equation for me. I simply sent my measurements and asked if he had a denim jacket in stock, and he did. I've heard of others asking him to hunt something FOR them, and he'll do it.

The price was expensive, but I've no regrets. The jacket looks similiar to the one he has on in the video. It has nice fades and is well used, but is not destroyed or ripped. For a cubicle warrior like me, that's half the appeal; I'll never achieve a patinated look because I don't actually work in workwear.

Well whadda'ya call work if not sitting at a PC pounding out endless posts about raglan coats, huh? Me, a coffee stained tweed with an aroma of Pringles and rotting salami is my work wear, hunched over this cell phone trying to come up with stuff that will keep me off ignore.
