Yesterday in a Press ad, I noticed an offer for a "Pinpoint, point collar, button down" shirt. I thought it was a misprint. Todays daily online ad for Press is for shirts and the terminology is the same. When did a point collar button down become a thing? Do they consider the placket buttons "button down"? It seems contradictory and confusing. In the case of a true button down as we have come to know it, shouldn't it be a "button down, button down"?
Just an old trad's observation.

And based on the emails J.Press sends me, Richard Press is still involved in the company - he shouldn't let this happen.

Dumbing down through misuse is a constant process. See 'tarmac' and in our world, 'shirting'.

Not to pick a nit, but the term shirting is an industry term of long standing as are the terms suiting, and jacketing.
It has evolved from meaning "the fabric from which shirts are made" to "fancy word for shirts". You can find retailers using the latter.

Yeah, and sitting on the tarmacadam sounds really yucky.
Tarmac is a name for a specific type of road surfacing material. It has been dumbed down to mean hard surface at an airport, which is actually concrete.

Yep. I thought you were referring to the shortening of the word itself, sort of like changing hill walking to hiking. Usage of words is fascinating stuff. While we are often making our language easier, or quicker, to speak, I sometimes speculate that we are giving up some precision and nuance. It may just be a reflection of some nuances that I appreciate becoming irrelevant to new generations.

With regard to J. Press collars, it seemed to me that the description might have been accurate as written. I find their OCBD collars to have a shape and length I'd generally associate with a point collar but with the addition of the buttons.

I agree. Some button down collars could be more accurately described as 'Spread Collar Button Down Collar' while others are point collars which are also button downs. I have sold shirts which I have described as 'Club Collar Pin Collar' as well as shirts which I described as 'Point Collar Pin Collar'. So sometimes it takes more in the description to clarify what an item actually is.

However I took a look at one of their online catalog listings referred to by the OP and the shirt in question is a point collar shirt, not a button down collar shirt.

Got a reply today from AJ Press Customer Service,
"Thank you for contacting J.Press customer care. We update name of the shirt."
I somehow do not think Richard Press wrote that😉
Weren't they bought out several years ago?
I'd be curious to know if they actually update the description. I once noticed the J Press website describing a linen sport coat as having leather buttons (which it obviously didn't). I sent an email to customer service letting them know. They replied with a thank you; said they would correct the description but never did.

In this morning’s electronic mail delivery was a missive from J. Press regarding their OCBDs. It had a picture of them. It appears that their collars may have lengthened, although it’s hard to be sure from one photo. They were also $125.

Nope. Flap pockets are alright if you are wearing a suit or sport coat, but if you wear glasses, especially readers, or carry a pen, they are a PITA. I’ve had various of their shirts over the years, and the only ones I still have are the short sleeve Madras, bought on one of their very fine sales. As a new retiree I am fine with a small selection of OCBDs and am thankfully not in the market! The only reason I have about half a dozen is for selection. In terms of actual need one would probably suffice!

I believe that is J.Press' equivalent of, when I was growing up, my mother's "we'll see."

They are words to appease you while the speaker has no intention of doing anything you asked.

I suppose so, but it's not like I was asking them to take me out for ice cream after dinner ;).
Why not? I think a little ice cream after shopping and dinner sounds like a winning formula!

;0)
Getting a new OCBD followed by ice-cream sounds like a heck of a good day to me.
