Gentlemen:

While it is widely held that the most durable and best looking suiting fabrics come from Italy, Britain, and nearby; some have it that this thinking is merely a myth fabricated to preserve the market share of textile mills in the West, where labor and therefore production costs are greater.

On the surface, both claims have merit. On one hand, a mill is just a mill, and can be in Italy, Korea, or anywhere else. One the other hand, Western firms presumably rely on time-refined techniques and can afford a greater attention to detail.

What can accurately be said about the relative qualities from various countries? More important, can anyone suggest how a basic consumer can identify nice but reasonably priced fabrics?
