The very first car I ever WANTED was a Porsche 356 Cabrio. The first car I ever bought with my own money was a 1958 MGA (which I believe is the car in the background). The car I have been driving for the last 22 years is a 911 Targa (because it had a beltline that reminded me of the 356).

This picture must be in England where they made the German car park down the driveway?

It is hard for one not to absolutely love the picture in the OP and what it represents. However, I must tell you I am not one of those inclined to be fans of the Porsche brand of automobiles. Frankly, they have always struck me as 'way too much money for way too little transportation reliability. A foolish pit in which to dispose of one's assets, but perhaps no worse than the Corvette I thought I couldn't live without! I think it time for me to take my chinos, my button down shirts and my penny loafers and drive off into the sunset in my Chevy. LOL. ;)

⇧ Having not owned a car since moving into NYC in '89, my opinions are all of the armchair theoretical type.

I've always thought it would be fun to own (as a second car) a late '50s/'60s foreign sports car. I've gone through different periods (all in my head) where I like this or that make or model more, but I always love the concept.

Having enough friends who have done so, I've come away from their experiences recognizing that it is an indulgence where the price is not tied to some intrinsic transportation value (as you note, buy a practical, thoughtfully priced car for that), but is simply a luxury good for aficionados.

You do it when all the necessary expenses are covered and you can treat yourself to something impractical.

As noted, I have no experience with them, but continue to romanticize the idea in my head. :)

^^ Nope, no staff!
I'm not sure it would have qualified as an estate, but our home in NW Indiana came with a couple of wooded acres, that always seemed to need tending to. I regularly spent 6 to 10 hours of virtually every free weekend...maintaining the estate. Yea, that's my story and I am sticking to it! ;)
