Would an odd jacket made from this brown worsted flannel, paired with trousers made from cavalry twill, be a good combination?

From what I have learned this fabric would be too heavy to wear with 11 oz. gabardine.
Worsted flannel is not an appropriate odd jacket material. It's a suiting and will look like you're missing your suit trousers.

Thanks Matt. I am learning!

I have asked my tailoring shop and a couple of fabric shops for fabric appropriate to use for an odd jacket, and I have been presented with many fabric swatches that are non-formal suit fabrics. I wish I could find a good fabric store that understands the difference between suit fabric and odd jacket fabric.

Worsted flannel is a fairly formal suiting.

Clothes straight from the cloth merchants usually come in books that label what they are used for. Good tailors should know the difference too. Salespeople may not.

Here is part of the e-mail that I sent to a New York City fabric store, a really old one, explaining what kind of fabric I was looking for:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am very interested in fabrics that can be used for a sports jacket. I would like the fabrics to be medium weight and lightweight. Someone had suggested that I look for hopsack fabric, because hopsack has noticeable texture. I would also be interested in other types of fabrics that have noticeable texture and would make a nice sports jacket. I am interested in muted brown colors, warm grays and cold grays. I am interested in solid colors only (no patterns), but the fabric could be made up of different colors which looks like a solid color.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They sent me grays, browns and some other colors. Here is a link to a scanned image of the brown swatches I received from them:

All of these swatches look like suit fabric, except for #4,#5, #9 and #15. I was planning on purchasing #5.

Thanks,

Chris

Many more of these are jacketings than you think. The first two are hopsack, just like you asked for!

I would think that a jacket made from these fabrics would pair nicely with wool gabardine or cotton twill, but maybe not with denim.
Agree with Matt; I'd say 1, 2, and potentially 3 could also be odd jacket contenders; personally I think they'd be fine with denim, but pairing jackets with denim is a pretty subjective topic (especially here)!
