Is a 3pc Snobbish?

I was in a store a while back with a friend and he asked the clerk "Is a three piece suit snobbish?".

The clerk said, "Yes, but it can be very attractive, depending on the suit.".

The thread on waistcoats made me ask, "Is a three piece suit snobbish"? Not specifically a contrasting waistcoat, but a matching or very similar vest.

Classic, yes. Dignified, yes. Imposing, yes. Snobbish? :fool:
Some people think that any well-dressed man looks snobbish.
My thoughts almost exactly. To "classic" and "dignified" I would also add practical and comfortable.

Interestingly, at dinner the other night there were several other men wearing waistcoats, and almost all of the men were at least reasonably dressed for dinner at a nice restaurant. A few years ago in the same circumstances in this area I would certainly have been the only one wearing a waistcoat, quite possibly the only one wearing a tie, and one of a small number who'd put a jacket on. Instead, those who hadn't made an effort to dress suitably were the exception.

This is not an area known for its sartorial excellence, but recently I have seen many encouraging signs - the pocket handkerchief is becoming common, tweed is no longer a rare sight, the reappearance of the leather shoe (particularly brown brogues). Perhaps the revolution is finally getting under way.

In this day an age where people say "suit-wearing" as a derogatory term, I'm sure that some find even sports jackets snobbish. If you like it, wear it.
In fact, those people don't tend to differentiate between a suit and any other kind of jacket with lapels.

As an aside to my other comment, I could understand a 3-piece suit coming off as snobbish if you were to wear one in the wrong circumstances. For example, only a few people wear a suit of any kind in my office, and they are higher-ups. Should someone in a lower position come in wearing a 3p, it could come off as odd. Maybe not "snobby", since I feel that's a matter of attitude, but it would seem out of place and potentially inappropriate. It's important to be aware of your surroundings.

If someone sees a waistcoat and labels the wearer as a snob, that same person may judge you for having a clean-shaven face...
a neat haircut...
a white dress shirt...
a necktie...
cuff links...
a pocket square...
a sport coat...
a suit...
... or even if you're a man over 30 who maintains a slim build.

Such people invariably tag themselves by a passive-aggressive comment. I ignore such people.

Indeed they do, for most of the above list.
I get such passive-aggressive snarky comments from my brother in law whenever he sees me wear tweed.
It's a class warrior thing.

I guess it depends on context.

I work for the UK government, and dress code is basically anything. Most men will wear a shirt and smart trousers at the minimum. Others will wear full suits. There is no need to go the whole nine yards where I work, so when people do, they normally get called out. THere is an older gentleman who wears a 3 piece everyday and looks great. THen there is someone my age who wears a 3 piece every day (unfortunately, it doesn't fit him that well), and people think he is posh.

On the other hand, a 3 piece in the boardroom would be acceptable. My cousin is a barrister, and literally every barrister HAS to wear a 3 piece.

Myself and a couple others at work wear three piece suits. I try to wear at least one of mine every week. (Meaning, the same couple suits but with the waistcoat). It doesn't get us ostracized, though I'm the only one who wears his with braces and/or side tabs. Worth noting this is a menswear store, so it's not THAT out of place.
