IMHO, it really is a function of what looks best with the outfit you're wearing, taking into account the texture / formality. I wouldn't pair a smooth broadcloth with a herringbone tweed. I wouldn't pair a oxford cloth with a more smooth textured suit. End on End, Royal Oxford and pinpoint oxfords could fall between those two extremes, making them somewhat more versatile.

While technically poplin fabric is woven from weft thread that is coarser than the warp thread, whereas they're the same thickness in broadcloth, the two cloths are otherwise identical, and the terms are often used interchangeably to describe the same cloth.

Interesting... thought it was broadcloth and end-on-end that were almost the same
