I must say that, with great respect for Alan Flusser, his personal style is certainly not mine. I make no judgments here, just a statement on preferences. The checks and plaids in his suits and sports coats are rather loud for my personal taste. I do like some bold colours and patterns, but for me, that should be confined to a single item in an ensemble and should gracefully combine with the other patterns and colours in the palette for that ensemble. But then, I also find distasteful some of the patterns and colours used by an eminently influential figure in men's style, the late Duke of Windsor. So perhaps it is me, rather than these sartorial paragons, who could be the odd man out, LOL.

I guess to put it in context, although I've poured over his books for many years I have never read an article or seen a photograph of him until I stumbled upon one the other day.

This is an author who penned the line, (with what I imagined a slight sneer)...typically worn by one who makes his living on commission.

I assumed his dress would have been more a reflection of his writing.

I think drpeter hit the nail on the head...I see no attempt at graceful integration....the bold stripes with that suit, the vivid green belt, the socks....total antithesis to his written words. The more I look at the suit I appreciate it, just not the ensemble.

But hey he had made his living...eh gads...off of sales proceeds...or commission.

Unlike you, and unfortunately, I saw photographs of him early on and so never allowed my fingers anywhere near his books, and for the same reason stopped reading a favorite author who wrote not even of clothing, but was found by me to be a damn fool once I saw how he presented himself, Tom Wolfe. You may deem this shallow thinking, but my head is fairly busy when awake and age and space up there does not allow for much damn foolery so certain things have to be shucked, including people, and poor presentation is a crucial factor in lifting the lid on the trash can. Flusser looks simply awful in the photo shown, not caught in a forgivable, unguarded moment, but posed to his idea of perfection.

I can certainly think of better outfits and models to showcase the pretty nice shirt and tie combination. There was a discount store called Steinmart, and many of its offerings had Flusser's name on them. While they were interesting enough to invite inspection, they had, without exception, an element of garishness that was just off. I am a person who enjoys some garishness, be it a Madras jacket or shirt, a bright orange sweater, or a purple bowtie. I just do not like the sense of off-ness.

I own one pair of pants from Flusser via Steinmart. Not exactly what I would call the highest quality but, serviceable. While the fabric is suspect, the drape is good and the cut is full — they’re a pincord in a ivory/light brown.
