I think it depends on how tall you are...on my shorter clients I have done 1.25 - 1.5 ...taller clients 1.5 - 1.75 and really big guys 2 (I always ask what they prefer but usually they defer to me)

1.5 seemed like it wasn't enough and 1.75 seemed at tad much (I'm approx. 5'9") so I split the difference and went with 1.625 (1 5/8). I'm happy with my decision. My tailor must think I'm crazy, perhaps he's right.
