For some reason, cinching up my tie this morning made me think back to the first time that I did this. Given I grew up in a rather blue collar setting; I didn’t learn to fashion my four-in-hands at my fathers pinstriped knee. My education here was more a product of necessity as I was hired into my first real job at age 16 at a supermarket in NJ, where at the time the uniform was a shirt, a tie, and a hideous green jacket.
A few days before I was to start, I hoofed it down to the local JC Penny to begin what was to be a life long journey of tie and shirt purchases. After selecting what at the time I believed to be three very spiffy and expensive shirts and ties, the horror finally set in that I had no idea how to tie the ornery things. So back out to the sales floor I went and surreptitiously grabbed an already tied tie off of one of the displays. Bringing it into the dressing room, I stayed there for the better part of a half hour slowly taking the knot apart, and then putting it back together several times so I would remember. To many on this boards horror, the knot that I was examining turned out to be a half Windsor, and hence this became my tie knot exclusively for the next six years of my life.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone else have a story like this?
