Hat to coat.
Gloves to coat.
Scarf to coat.
Shoe to what is under the coat.

To be just a little sexist, don't "womanize" this. You're not puting together an "outfit".

I have a black/charcoal coat I wear with a black fedora and white or red scarf and black gloves when I wear black shoes and a "heather" green Chesterfield I wear with a brown hat, green or brown scarf and brown gloves when I wear brown shoes. Perhaps it seems a bit overdone, but it really just evolved and now requires no effort.

As before...

Hat to coat.
Gloves to coat.
Scarf to coat.
Shoe to what is under the coat.

I disagree with the first section and agree with the second. Matching is less of a concern than coordinating. You really aren't putting together an "outfit" because it's not like a twinset... just make sure they look good together. Sometimes a little clash is good.

This is surely the way to do it - a simple distinction between "black-shoe" clothes and "brown-shoe" clothes.

You are correct. I was trying for a quick post
let's try again
Hat complement Coat
Gloves complement Coat
Scarf complement Coat
Shoes complement what is worn under the hat coat and gloves.

matching would be a bad idea.

You do not have to:

Scarf: If you like to wear the scarf of your 'alma mater', then that does not need to be justified by matching any other part of your apparel.

Gloves, probably not black with brown shoes and vv, but not a great thing.

Hates: Well maybe a red beanie would not look right with a morning suit otherwise....

There is a growing danger of 'outfits' becoming regimented because people follow web boards rather using their judgement for that which fits their circumstances and life-style.

black shoes - black gloves

brown spectrum (brown, burgundy etc.) shoes - gloves from said spectrum (not necessarily the same shade)

scarf - up to you
