Gentlemen:

How many blazer buttons would you put on the sleeves of a 2B, SB navy blue blazer? All my (very) old BB blazers have 3 buttons, but when I went to 346 earlier today, I noticed lots of blazers w/ 2 buttons.

Thanks for your advice.

As many as you like.

The old Brooks system was 3 sleeve buttons on the 2-button jackets and 2 sleeve buttons on the 3-button jackets. This was supposedly so that the salesmen could tell which sort of jacket it was without having to pull it off the rack.

When sewing on buttons myself, I put 2 on each sleeve, not 3. The reason for this is that I'm not very accurate with my sewing and a set of three on a sleeve has to be aligned and distributed much more evenly than a simple pair of buttons.

I particularly like the look of 2 buttons, slightly spaced, but that's on my 3/2 sack jackets. Flusser, if I recall, says that a jacket should have an even number of buttons -- 2 or 4, please, not 6 -- but I don't know that he gives any particular reason why this is so. Then again, 3 is a very popular choice, probably the most popular, in fact. And some say it should be a factor of height, so that taller people, who will have longer sleeves, need more buttons than shorter people, so that the balance is correct.

Conclusion: whatever you want.

I must admit. I secretly thrill at the 2 buttons on my old Brooks sacks I've acquired. It's so "old school":icon_smile_wink:

If I was starting with new blazer, I'd prefer only 3. 4 seems too much, esp. with the gold buttons.

While I agree that 4 brass buttons is a lot of metal on the sleeve, I generally follow the dictum that the sleeve buttons should be equal to or a multiple of the jacket buttons, i.e., a 2-button jacket would have either 2 or 4 sleeve buttons while a 3-button would have at least 3 buttons. I couldn't make a case for this being any more logical than BB's old formula. Usually, I just replace what was originally on the jacket.
