The answer to your question, of course, is that the coat bottom is supposed to cover the bottom of the vest; the pic is extreme in it's incorrectness.

Oh, look - two of them:

Chap in the back even managed to button his tailcoat (it's more obvious in other pictures).

This fellow's half-slung his coat off his shoulders; the waistcoat goes lower even than the FOUR stud holes, he's spilled sauce on his shirt and he's looking down his date's cleavage. If she was my daughter I'd be worried ...

The older gentlemen (the girls' fathers, I take it) tend to have properly fitting dress.

Obviously (to members here), those waist coats are far too long. However, all of the men pictured had the same problem. Does anyone know if it is a costume peculiar to that specific event?

It's probably due to the fact that they all went to the same hire place and were served by someone who didn't know/care about the fit.

Plus, any white tie offerings that I've seen in hire places, always seem to have the trousers cut too low to wear the waistcoat at the right height. Some of the gents on that site did look a lot better than the examples above. To be fair, I'm sure they never thought what for many might have been the first their white-tie venture would end up being discussed on a forum.

Anyone who attends an event designed to draw publicity for a charity is simply fair game for discussion, on this forum or on the local celebrity page. Especially since this was put together as a kind of society ball.

Just another reason to make sure you look your best whenever you are going out in public.

If this was a private celebration, I would have not posted the pictures in the first place, out of courtesy to those involved.

No doubt the rental staff were as clueless as the customers.

However, there is also an onus on the hosts of such an event to coach the young male participants in the details of proper full dress if they wish their affair to be the auspicious occasion that they envisioned when they called for white tie in the first place. So often in these types of situations the focus is entirely on the female participants and their escorts are viewed as little more than dolled-up accessories.
