It's been frustrating trying to find AE shoes that fit. Depending on the shoe, I can be anywhere from 8.5 to 9.5 (I'm 9.5B on the Brannock). There are many good deals on ebay for older models. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find sizing information for such shoes (unlike the current models, which often have good crowd-sourced, review-based sizing info on the AE website).

I know that my situation is not unique, but I'm curious: were AE sizing conventions more standard in the past or were they alway highly shoe-dependent?

Thanks.

The difference can be explained by the last the shoe is made on. Shoe size is but one indicator of fit. Much like the Brannock device. It’s meant to give you a starting point.

My advise is try on several pair in store. Get an idea of what fits and what doesn’t.
