Trousers Hand Plant Leg Dress shirt
Hi guys, I am a physics undergrad at Columbia and thought I'd post a picture of my outfit today. I'd love to here your comments and advice. Was the perfect weather in Manhattan for some Harris Tweed. Photo was taken on campus. All items are J Press, and are hand me downs except the sport coat which I got on deep discount. It's a 36r and took a lot of saving up to acquire but I'm loving it! Shoes are Loake Brogues. Also on deep discount.

Let me know if Ishould post more of these throughout the semester.

Thanks,

-Kyle

Hello, Kyle. Thanks for posting your outfit today! Like anyone who is starting to wear well fitting, good looking outfits... success doesn't come easily, but you're off to a good start.
• The color combinations seem good*
• Your pattern combinations are off to a good start
• You have a fair amount of work to get your fits closer to perfection (Your jacket and shirt sleeves are at least two inches too short and your trouser inseam is about two inches too long.)

Take the coat back to J. Press and have them lengthen the sleeves by about 1 1/2". They shouldn't have let you leave the store looking like that. Otherwise you look fine for an undergrad.

Hi Tim, they are not bell bottoms, it was windy when the pic was taken to the pants were flailing quite a bit and as far as the brick pavements go, they have been working a lot on replacing all of them!

Thanks for the feedback Billax. You have indirectly given me a lot of sartorial advice with your great posts and I thank you for that!

Thanks for the tip, once it heats up I will take it back for alteration, does it fit elsewhere or should I take it in a bit?
Other than the sleeve length, it looks good to me. Is this a recent purchase from their clearance sale? I really wanted to buy another tweed (or 2) but I've bought more clothes the past 3 months than I want to acknowledge.

If they can let out an inch in the shoulders and waist it would enable you to wear a Shetland underneath and accommodate any weight you might add, but the sleeves are the most critical. Otherwise, I think it's a fine, casual outfit.

Thanks, that's interesting to here since I am extremely thin: never thought I would need to have a jacket taken out x) but layering it and still having room is a good point.

Yes, this is a recent purchase (a few weeks ago from their clearance sale.) Picked it up for a great price!

That's the key. I don't think form fitting looks good on extremely thin people. Embrace the "sack" suit and let out the waist. Besides the sleeves, I'd opt for a longer jacket. It is probably impossible/costly to lengthen the existing one.

Also, a darker shoe goes better with your outfit. Are you going to wear this for a special event?

Thank you for that!, it gives me a new confidence in wearing the sack look! I needed this confidence: I hate slim fitting suits and often get told these are too baggy. Do you think I should size up to a 38 regular?

How does it feel in terms of comfort? Does it constrict movement? If so, I'd size up. From just one picture alone, I'd say the shoulders are good to slightly tight.

Are you in/pledging a frat by any chance?

No. It is impossible to let out a shoulder, see second paragraph.

Size up to a 38? My gawd, what size is it? Yes, size up if you can, then take IN and UP if you need to.

A word, you can never, ever widen shoulders or lengthen a jacket. Because: at the shoulder and its sleeve attachment there is
a scant 3/8" of cloth and this is universal and have never seen more. And the reason you can't lengthen a jacket, even though there is a fairly-standard 1 1/2" turned-under, is it reverts back to the 3/8 thing a few inches from the opening on both sides, the curved portion, the cut-away.

I think you're on your way to looking very good.

Billax’s advice is unsurprisingly spot on. The shoulders look good, which is the most important thing to get right. You do not need to size up, nor do I think you need to let out the body. Jacket length looks good to me as well.

Kyle. I think your rig looks great, there are a couple of fit issues but it is obvious you are a confident young man.

Enjoy the fact that you are thin. It doesn't last forever.
