I'm curious, because I've never tried on an Italian suit, and I just ordered a Canali tailcoat from Sak's in a size 48. I'm ~38-40 in US sizes.

Do they base it on shoulder size as opposed to chest? Because 48cm is just under 19", which seems like it is a bit wider than a 38's shoulders.

I appreciate it.

I don’t know if they have the same system down on the continent but in Scandinavia we also have a size for the fit. B is a slimfit, C is a normal fit and D is for the big boned. A typical American size 40 suit would be a size C50 in Scandinavia.

We also have a strange way of showing if its a short, regular or long suit. If you want a short suit you should double the orginal number and if you want a long suit you place a "1" infront of the original number. An american size 40S is therefor a C100 and a american 40L is a C150.
