How do you clean brogue shoe holes?

Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to clean out the accumulated dirt etc. from holes in brogue shoes, without scratching the leather?

I acquired an older pair of Church's shoes - lovely but need the holes cleaned after a few decades of dust, a little wax in places, etc.
