how can i use a bow tie...

...and don't look like a nerd? (or a substitute teacher?) I really would love to try one, but I'm afraid to look sort of "clownish"...is there a way? what kind of suits and shirts? how can someone say "authority" with a bow tie, as a regular tie would do?
