I recently purchased a web belt to wear casually with khakis. There was only a one size fits all option and the belt is excessively long. What do you do with the excess length? Tuck it in to belt loops? Should I have it shortened and if so can they put the metal end piece back on? Thanks for the help!

Military style web belts shorten at the buckle end.

Have any sort of screw clamp on the work bench? The metal nib pries off easily, crop the belt, reapply the nib using the screw clamp - - - pliers won't apply enough pressure.

I guess it really comes down to the type of belt. I have gone to the trouble of having belts (leather) shortened at the cobbler. For ribbons D ring belts I haven't bothered I just tuck the excess back under the belt loop. Although I do love the doughnuts suggestion. MMMM doughnuts....

Patagonia's famous web belts are nylon and are sewn to the buckle. You shorten them with a putty knife that is heated in a torch, sort of like a hot knife through cold butter.

For a long casual cloth or web belt belt, I sometimes loop the extra over, then behind the belt and let it hang down. It is a bit of safari style I have used every now and then in the field. It gets the job done.
Mostly, i purchase belts that fit and have much more experience with them becoming magically too short vs. long.
