I'm getting ready to leave sunny San Diego for the Queen City (Cincinnati) and it occurs to me that I am somewhat lacking in winter outerwear. I have a few light jackets that are appropriate for the spring and can work in the winter with some additional layers (a light puffer, a leather jacket, a heavy fleece, a wool car coat, and Harris Tweed, maybe a few others). I also have a very heavy weight Hickey Freeman overcoat for occasions in which I'll be in a suit.
But, there will be times when I'll need a jacket that can go over top of indoor clothing (either business casual for work or truly casual on the weekends) but which will still allow me be outdoors for an indefinite period of time. I'm envisioning going out Christmas shopping downtown in jeans and a long sleeved shirt, but wanting something to put on over it that will allow for standing around outside when the wife and kid want to ride a merry-go-round or something.
My first thought was a heavy (or heavier) weight puffer jacket, but I'm open to other options.

I know this forum tends to lean to the more elegant looks, but please keep in mind that this will likely need to be dressed down frequently.

I appreciate any suggestions you can offer.

I grew up near Cicny. You'll want the coat. And a coat to go over the coat. If you are standing around outside, you want thermal underwear. The weather in Cinci is quite variable. Murphy being the evil entity that he is, you will find yourself in -25F with only a pair of jeans between your flesh and the gale force wind. Two days after your frostbite experience, it will be 70F, though.
