Thanks to all of you I now *need* seasonal shoes. I am looking for something to wear with cotton trousers to blue jeans. I have a pair of boat shoes but those wouldn't be office appropriate. I've read some older posts and rec'd seem to narrow it down to dirty bucks or a suede chukka. I'd like to hear recommendations on which would be the most versatile of the two styles. I tend to lean chukka if for no other reason than I can find a good fit easier in chukkas.

And am I in the right track on a summer shoe with these examples?

Eastland Men's Buck, Taupe, 8.5 D - Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UPOTKW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_PuC4CbB554NGT

I only find easy fits in chukkas when they have rounded lasts - so, basically, I only find easy fits in desert boots. Sleeker chukkas are as hit and miss as any dress shoes to my feet.

Your options are fine. If your shoe collection is more limited, I say get a chukka simply due to their very versatile nature, as opposed to a buck which is rather limited. If you already have a large collection, both your options look good to me

Either blucher/derby or chukka is suitable. Whichever more takes your fancy.

All those above look fine, though I'm disappointed that herring's Johnstone is reported to have been made in the mysterious land of Imported, as they're normally more forthcoming that that.

Know nothing about the Eastland shoe, though it passes the eye test. Likely China or Brazil though.

The Sargent shoe is in another league. Much more serious footwear, and extra refinement.

Notice the differences in the soles. You're going to get a different ride and they will each offer a different aesthetic effect.

Lots of good choices -

Thanks everyone. Good to know I’m on the right track. Since my collection is limited at this point I may lean towards the chukka in ginger. I do love AS but may go the cheaper route with Herring and use the extra cash to buy some madras shirts...or summer trousers...or maybe everything. Ha!

In my opinion, if you're going to get cheaper shoes, suede is the place to do it. Decent cheap suede still looks nice, and it's only really when you get into true high end suede that it is readily apparent from more than a foot away. It's quite apparent that EG uses a much higher end suede than AE, but it isn't all that apparent that AE uses nicer suede than something cheap like a Clark's desert boot.

Okay, I have a dumb question. You'd think after a year+ in this forum I would have this figured out. I'm looking to buy this chukka.

My summer wardrobe is sad. I've worn shorts and blue jeans all my life. I'm working on upgrading to chinos and nicer cotton trousers. So this would work with lighter blue jeans (assume dark jeans wouldn't look good) and khaki/tan cotton trousers?

Maybe I should ask what these *wouldn't* work with?

They're more on the casual side than the shoes recommended by Flanderian but your combination does work for me. They would also likely work with dark blue jeans but who, in their right mind, wears dark blue jeans on a hot summers day? Not me:).

Those wouldn't pair well with trousers in exactly the same shade. Otherwise, you're pretty much good.

Consider Lof & Tung by Skoaktiebolaget. Their suede is quite a bit nicer than most comparably priced offerings.

Although I do like a nice chukka (the Alfred Sargent shoe with the shoe trees included is a huge step up in quality) it is not my "go to" for a summer shoe. Putatively, it is still a boot which is far from my summer shoe inclination. Your choice will be fine as a general addition to your wardrobe - but I would still suggest you consider one of the grey derbies in suede. Although the chukka will do fine with jeans, once you start to wear cotton or linen trousers in light colors it may look a bit out of place.

I haven't pulled the trigger on any Lof and Tung shoes. I gather you have - any comments on where they sit in the hierarchy of shoes?
