Shoes, socks, shirts are easy but I sometimes struggle with tie options.

I just acquired a nice light brown plaid summer suit but would welcome any suggestions. The fabric does have a bit of blue in it.

While there are certainly exceptions, this jacket would accommodate most attractive ties, especially those that include a light blue accent to pick up the jacket's stripe. A solid light blue tie would also work nicely if the shirt is not light blue (i.e., white or ecru). A yellow shirt would not work, but pink just might with the right tie -- that would very much be a trust your eye kind of thing.

I think that this is an easier match than you think. The choices above are all pretty good. Paul's paisley is nice because the pattern is different than the suit. A Pocket Square in similar paisley would work well too although I would probably suggest a solid blue tie with that type of PS otherwise the ensemble gets too busy.

The blue in the suit is somewhat pale so you may be able to go with something much lighter (for a spring/summer look) like this:
