Heavy, thick, can be broken in OCBD

Along my journey of trying to dress nicer since I am new in the career world, I have become fond of OCBD shirts.

I see a huge difference in what each brand calls an oxford shirt. Some are so thin, you can pretty much see right through them.

I am looking for the thick, heavier, needs to be broken shirt. I have a BB made in USA that I really like since it falls under these categories. I also have an old made in USA Lands Ends that isn't very thick. I still like the shirt, but I would like something thicker.

RL shirts seem pretty thick as well

What brands out there or MTM places carry that thick oxford material?

LL Bean's OCBD's are reasonably priced and seem fairly heavyweight to me. I bought two of the trim fit ones recently and they're much roomier than a BB slim fit, but still reasonable on me. They are "wrinkle-free", but they don't seem to have any noticeable coating on the fabric, unlike the Land's End OCBD I bought which is shiny, and not nearly as heavyweight.

I've had the same experience as you have with thin "oxford cloth" shirts. Some of these I realized after the fact are pinpoint oxford, not oxford cloth. This page talks about the differences:

The all cotton need to be ironed BB OCBD are thick and close behind are J.Press OCBD. Skip the PRL.
Agreed on the BB. Just be sure which one you're getting, as BB stocks several different models labeled OBCD. You're looking for the Classic All-Cotton Traditional Fit Original Polo® Button-Down Oxford Dress Shirt, Made in the USA and located here -

Gitman Bros., F.A. MacCleur, LE Hyde Park. All heavy weight, beefy, thick quality ocbds. Limited colors. Gitman Bros. Heavy Oxford (Cambridge cloth) comes in white, blue, pink and blue uni stripe....F.A. MacCleur in blue and white...LE Hyde Park in blue, white and occasional stripes. Hyde Park is most economical and was their iconic shirt for years coming in many colors, stripes and patterns--but cut back in recent times. BB OCBD of course has been mentioned and has the largest selection--for now. Mercer I have no experience with.

With the additional benefit that if you buy the traditional fit, you can use it as a spinnaker as well.
Or you can enjoy a non-binding classic fit that works well for a range of men. You may not care for the fit, but be kind enough to not diss those of us who do.

Thanks for the reply Flanderjan. Do you know if the material in the 346 is the same as the 1818? (I'm talking about the oxford cloth button down must-iron?)
Sorry, I do not. But it would surprise me if it was. I doubt they'd bother to sell a shirt for less that they can be sell for more. Most/all of the 346 merchandise is produced only for their outlet stores and is not the same quality as their main line.

At one time that was the norm for U.S. made shirts. I would assume Brooks decided to keep them as they always had been for the sake of those who feel it is traditional.
Probably, but I always assumed it was because they're a pain in the butt. Aren't the plackets, or gauntlets, or whatever you call 'em, shorter on the BB than on other shirts, thus making the extra button unnecessary?

The Gitman OCBD is the beefiest I have found. I have 6 colors: white, blue, blue stripe, pink (all stock colors), yellow and pink stripe (both were a made to order type deal). I get mine from Landry's in Oxford, MS. They are pricey ($105 or so) but you won't find a better shirt. I like that the fit is somewhere between the BB slim and regular fits.

The BB sleve gauntlet may possibly be shorter, but 25 or so years ago when a gauntlet button became the norm, BB didn't change its configuration, even though it doesn't add much to the complexity of manufacture. While I enjoy and wear BB's OCBD, I wish it had a gauntlet button as I prefer to flip my cuffs when wearing a shirt around the house, and BB cuffs must be rolled or they keep falling down. It also looks neater when buttoned, IMHO.
