Apologies, i started the same thread earlier today... wonder why i didn't see this one & it didn't show up in my search...

Just looked at the AE website and the grey shown on the homepage is a lot lighter than the swatch AE sent to me. If the shoe is that light, I don't see myself taking it. The color of the swatch that I have is darker and more pleasing to the eye, in my opinion. I will take a look at them tomorrow.
as someone who is waffling between buying them for similar reasons, wgiceman, can you post a picture of you wearing the shoes so i can have a real life image? i don't live anywhere near a AE store...

Because in every other country you aren't?

I do like these grey shoes you've been previewing. Some of them are quite subtle it hardly feels it needs a discussion. The is interesting, I might have to think on it. But overall I think they are very wearable and I'd be happy to own some. When Zalora starts stocking this online among their men's shoe range, I'll know they've got it made in the local fashion scene. Will keep my eyes peeled in the meantime for some pairs to try. Expect I'll take to them quite easily

The color is called "anthracite," which is coal, and I have seem similar on customers from Argentina. Does anybody know if this popular in Italy?

BTW, I don't like them.

While I'm interested in grey and navy as shoe colors (as occasional grace notes to a whimsical ensemble, not as wardrobe staples), ironically, I hate the dark grey burnished look on these. They appear barely not black (just as the navy Florsheim wingtips my store had last year did), and close to distressed. While I value some burnish or patina in my brown shoes, I am drawn to the (almost certainly cheap and corrected grain) uniform medium grey. If you're gonna go oddball, go oddball. For the same reason, when I rock some fun socks, I prefer bright yellow argyle to hunter green on navy.

Just returned from the AE store and tried on the grey Park Avenue. They do not look bad at all, as far as color is concerned. However, i tried on the grey Parkway and the style of the shoe made it a winner for me. I have several pair of AE's on the #5 last already, so I decided to get something with a different shape. I had the Parkways placed on hold for me while an additional pair of Broadstreets were being replaced. I will pick up both pair on next week.

If you decide to get the more traditional Park Avenue, I don't think you will be disappointed. It came down to a matter of style for me.

That "granite grey calf" looks like a pair of black shoes that were left outside for a few months, tossed in a corner of the garage, and rediscovered when someone went looking for an old tennis racquet. No sale.

I had a gray shoe sighting yesterday evening, on James Caan in the film Thief. He wears light gray shoes with a 2-button DB notch lapel Armani suit (with a buttoning point lower than the hems of some modern coats), sans tie. The shoes were easily the most classic element of the look.

Hopefully it's just the picture and that the shoes are actually attractive. But to me, those look like black shoes that need polishing.

I have a pair of light-gray suede J Crew penny loafers (made in Italy) that I really like. The go great with most linen pants in the summer. I only wear them with an untucked shirt, since I have no matching belt. And that means summer only (and weekends mostly at that).

Dark gray smooth-leather dress shoes? I agree there's not much demand there. And what would you wear them with? Not a gray suit, I don't think. I guess if they were dark enough, they'd probably work as well as black--but then why not just wear black shoes?

Light gray dress shoes? I could see it in dressed-down wingtips to be worn with khakis or cords. In smooth leather, I'd think it belongs to a morning suit.

Re. the AE offerings in gray, they're not my cup of tea, either.

They remind me of the matte-finish cars Mercedes-Benz has been pushing. I feel like with a patina, grey calf could look nice.

I'm sure the grey suede that AscotWithShortSleeves mentioned is very nice. Grey seems like something that should be left to suede.

OT, but BMW has also been pushing cars with matte finish paint.

Oh, I don't care for any shoe colors other than black and brown. IMO, for shoes, gray is worse than most colors.
