hey guys, posted about this before but now i need to actually purchase something. like, within the next week.

i really want to stay on the affordable side, maybe ~$300 if possible.

since my wedding is outdoors in the dead of summer, i am thinking it makes sense to find something in linen or cotton but i am afraid that it might look way too casual.

for reference, my groomsmen are wearing lightweight navy wool suits.

here are some affordable options from J. Crew, your critiques are requested:

Oxford Cloth ~$155 all-in:

Linen (but apparently lined) ~$180 all-in:

Cotton-linen blend, unstructured ~$265 all-in:

Hey sharpie, no advise to offer here in terms of dress, it's been 55 years since that blessed day for my wife and I. I know things have changed since then in many ways I have my opinions but, others will offer great suggestions. Just want to wish you and soon to be bride the best of good wishes and hope you will be as blessed as I have.

I liked this choice better when you had five more months and double the budget.
With 2 months to go and a lower budget I would suggest taking this weekend to go shopping with your fiancee. Hit as many stores in your budget and choose the one that fits best/requires the least alterations/your fiancee approves. Certainly you could take photos of a few and show them here next week for better advice. If so make sure to wear the shoes/shirt/tie you plan to wear or as close as possible so we can judge accurately.
As much as it pains me to say, if you strike out this weekend you might want to consider renting a tuxedo. Especially if you don't already have the shoes/shirt/tie and cannot find anything that requires minimal alterations. Time is getting close and the nice thing about tuxedo rental is its a one stop shop. Just buy underwear and socks and the rest comes complete. Not your best choice back in December but now...
More importantly, congrats and have a great wedding.

really? i think i still have a bit of time. shipping takes a few days and alterations maybe a week.

planning to order/buy within the next day or so.

and, yes, the budget has come down only b/c i realized i'd wear a linen or cotton suit almost never again.

If you want to go with Jcrew - check out their outlet stores. I'm not really sure how their lines match up with their true retail stores... but we got a very nice suit that looks very similar to their "ludlow" line for like $150.

For our wedding, we got a slim fit tux by Hugo Boss. We did try on a few rentals, too.... the best was the slim fit tux by Vera Wang.

It's during the summer, outside and I'll assume during the day. Everything about this says casual. Why not your attire? Linen will be fine. Mazel Tov!
agreed. i posted two linen options and an oxford cloth one (arguably more casual?).

do any of these look OK? would any look ridiculous assuming groomsmen in navy?

thanks.

If your groomsmen are in navy wool, you should dress to a similar formality level and not below them. Wearing linen would be a step down. Wearing cotton would be another step down. Wool can be very comfortable in the heat, but it needs to be the right kind of wool.

i was a little afraid of that, but honestly, i would be surprised if anyone noticed anything off if i went with this option:

Never, ever underestimate the present day and future utility of a cotton poplin suit. I never thought I would be saying that, but frankly, during the dog days of summer in my present location, that's all I seem to wear! Keep your options open. ;)

I agree with Matt that it would be odd for the groom to dress below the formality level of his groomsmen. I'm all for wearing summer fabrics for an outdoor summer wedding, but not when your groomsmen are in wool suits. That just seems odd.

You're calling that charcoal? Looks far lighter than charcoal on my screen.
you're right, it is lighter than a charcoal though the description says it's a "flannel wool" which might be too warm?

not sure...looking into that one.

otherwise i might just stick with what i got all of my groomsmen, a MIUSA navy Hardwick Suit.

Good point. First there was this thread, which generated eight pages of comments....

https://askandyaboutclothes.com/community/threads/july-2018-wedding-northeast-usa-help-me.237932/

....followed by this one a few months later....

https://askandyaboutclothes.com/community/threads/help-me-pick-my-wedding-suit.238467/

And now here we are again.....
to be fair those threads were created well before i had determined the groomsmen situation. which is what i wanted to iron out first. now that i have, and have a better wrangle on what i am comfortable spending, here i am again.
