Getting a Casual Overcoat Made - Need Ideas!

So I'm having my tailor make me a casual overcoat for the winter (i.e. one that I would wear with jeans and a t/sweater and not over a 2 pc suit).

I was thinking about getting an above-the-knee dark grey plaid wool coat, with hacking pockets (but also with very discreet side slits where I can jam in my hands when NYC gets a little too cold), a peaked lapels, and contrast light yellow lining.

Seeing how this is my first time commissioning such a garment could aomeone please chip in with some ideas on what may look good on a casual overcoat?
