Hello Everyone. I rarely make threads but I was compelled! I have 2 questions about Gaziano and Girling and as my last boot hunt failed I might be really patient. I would mostly likely end up in a TG73...

  1. Can I have sizing advice? My best comparison with lasts we all know is Crockett and Jones. Via oxford styles, a 6.5E UK on the 337 really fits perfectly in the forefoot and instep. As another benchmark, a 7E UK on the 348 is too big, but a 6.5E UK on the 348 is too narrow [otherwise fits].
  2. Do you all remember last year when they had the 1 day, half off everything sale?

I think you guys can guess where my head is at here and what my hope and strategy is.

For reference I want Wigmores...

Traditional logic is to take a 1/2 size down from your US size. The exception to that general rule, as it pertains to the standard non-deco lasts, are the DG70 and TG73 lasts, both of which can be narrow on the toes. I would have concerns about you being comfortable in this last if you’re having trouble with the C&J 348 last, which is also narrow on the toes.

In my experience 348 is tight, 337 is loose. OTOH, I have TG73, DG70, MH71, KN14, and Deco. Honestly, they all fit me fairly well - or at least I don't feel the disparity is as great as with the C and J lasts. G and G is 1/2 size down from US. C and J a full size.

Thanks for the feedback so far! I keep looking to see if they are going to have a trunk show, but no luck! Do you think they are so big now they have stopped? I figure that would be a perfect way to evaluate the TG73 for sure

I sent a copy of this thread to G & G and got a response from Tony:

Hi Andy

In the past we have done a customer survey comparing different makers and their lasts, most customers have come back and confirmed that with the 337 last G&G is very similar and they wear the same size and fitting. So this would be my advise and go for the same size and fitting for the TG73.

Regarding the comment about the 50% sale, that sale was a one time sale, we may have promotions going forward but we probably wont do 50% discount for a few years.

Kind regards

Tony Gaziano

WOW!!!! Thanks Andy! I am floored. A reply from you AND Tony, hehe!

That is superb if he compares the TG73 to the 337;; the 337 is the best fitting last I have found to date!

I guess karma is on my side. I saw a car in front of me smash into another car tonight and i got out and helped.

Just FYI, G&G introduced a new a classics line today that's lower priced and a bit more conservative in styling.
Same email - I wonder what other differentiators allow a lower price. The sole doesn't have the fiddleback and doesn't appear as beveled. I guess the lasts are different also. Other English shoemakers have the same two tier pricing. Maybe they feel they have to compete with C and J and similar to grow market share?

They are definitely less shapely, wider, and would likely be easier to fit for more folks.

I guess there's just a good market for mid-tier to upper mid-tier English shoes. These are priced competitively with C&J Handgrade I think. I'm happy to see that they are Made in England but I wonder if they're actually made in Kettering or if they are contracted out some place.

I think I'll still buy the normal G&G. I just love that beveled waist, among other things.
