Hello all,

This past summer I picked up six pairs of flannel trousers off of EBay (including one Brioni and two Ralph Lauren) for a pittance.

When can I start wearing them? My wife says I should wait until November because the weather here in Michigan is still relatively warm... although it is cooling quickly.

Your thoughts?

This is a summary of what I have in the Encyclopedia:

Summer seasonal clothing, especially white, is traditionally worn from Memorial Day until Labor Day. And can be extended slightly beyond those dates in tropical climates. Winter clothing is the reverse - After Labor Day until Memorial Day.

It's interesting that those days are American holidays. Most other countries just go by the s
eason. In the UK summer clothing can be worn up until the summer bank holiday (except Scotland since their bank holiday is one month earlier).

There is some logic of trying to dress for comfort on a hot March day, but there is something inappropriate with wearing Madras out of season.
Here in the So. Cal. desert it's gotten down to the 80's F, but I have my cords in the closet, just in case it drops to the 70's!

When it's cool enough, and you feel like it.

Don't get anal retentive over flannel trousers.

I'm not denying the seasonal nature of clothing. I'd advise against the wearing of a seersucker suit in Minneapolis in February. And wearing moleskin trousers and a flannel shirt in Phoenix in August: probably not a wise choice.

But flannel trousers? Not in summer (unless you're in San Francisco, in which case you'll wear them if you know what's good for you). The rest of the year, wear them if they won't overheat you.

My wife says....
In a men's clothing forum, no sentence that begins with "My wife says" is going to end well.

When it's cool enough that you won't feel uncomfortable wearing them.

I've worn flannel as late as Memorial Day because it was unusually cool.

To the OP - I'm not far from you out there in AA and I've been wearing flannel trousers occasionally since the last week or two of September. I even wore them a couple times last week when we had mornings in the 40s and afternoons in the 80s.
