I'm interested in Filson's offerings, but there are no stores in my area which sell them (so I can feel them & try them on). I've been looking on several on-line sites, including Filson's site, and Crane's Country Store.

First, does anyone have experience with Filson clothing and/or coats?

Second, is anyone aware of a Filson jacket which is similar to Barbour's Beaufort coats?

I'd second the Weekender coat. I had a Field Jacket, but didn't like the arms (a bit too short for me; I wear a 35" shirt sleeve) and the lack of handwarmer type pockets. They are all well made.
Not sure where you're getting the lack of handwarmer pockets. The Field Jacket (1441n) definitely has them. I don't find the arms too short (34-35 here) but to each his own on that one. I think you can't go wrong with anything traditionally made by Filson, but the Field Jacket is I believe the closest thing to a Barbour you're going to find from them.

The Beaufort is 33" long I think, and the field coat is a short jacket, so in that sense they're quite different. The Weekender coat is surely closer in length. That said, I think that the Filson and Barbour coats are actually quite different in feel and appearance.

Totally agree on this last part (and you're right, field jacket is closer to the Bedale probably). Filson's to me seem more rugged and less dressy. Both are quality products so it depends more on what you're looking for.

I love the look of the Weekender, but I'm afraid that, priced in the mid-200s, it's a little too expensive for me to own as a knock-around jacket. Perhaps this is the eternal question, but does anyone have recommendations for a cheaper jacket of similar appearance/quality?

You can get 30% off list on Filson from a US-based supplier with the same name as a bird:icon_smile_big:. This makes it around $175...if it's the one you want, it's worth stretching, especially as it looks to me like a lifetime piece.

If not, I think John Partridge is good and you can sometimes pick them up on STP (I think it's the Zetland). Edit - here's another option

Happy hunting!

dont skimp, this is the one purchase where I can guarantee its worth it. having worked with filson's customer service as a retailer, and owned multiple products of filson's, either dont buy and save, or stretch for the filson coat. you won't regret it.
