You can just tuck the flaps in and leave the pockets open. Pockets are not meant to be sewn shut. If you want to sew the pockets shut the flaps will need to be removed so they don't imprint when pressing. Likewise, if you tuck the flaps in, be sure they are untucked when the jacket is pressed.

I have an old tweed that belonged to my late father. I always thought the pockets were jetted until I actually inspected it after he passed and found that he just liked to wear the flaps tucked in! So I agree, no one will notice. And you always have the option of wearing the flaps outside of the pockets for a change of pace.
