Hey Fellas,

First, just want to introduce myself. Long-time lurker, really enjoy reading some of the informed posts on the board.

My sartorial desires have changed quite a bit in the last few years as Ive been working in a corporate setting and graduated undergrad a few years ago. Id love to upgrade to a leather band and rock the Tag on weekends or in more casual settings. Not looking to go crazy with the choices but as a point of reference I love the LOOK of the IWC Portuguese series...but lets be honest, thats not in my price range. Ive been eyeing this EP Martin Cartridge for a bit (in white or black): https://epmartinusa.com/cartridge/

Obviously square or circular face is an option but I definitely want a leather band and something in the $250-$750 range. Would appreciate any suggestions from you guys. I didnt find too much when doing a thread search.

I would suggest a watch that I just purchased. A Seiko SARB031. It's the first real nice watch that I've owned so I don't have a lot to compare it to but absolutely love it. Also, I believe that you get a lot of watch for the money. The only place I am aware of that sells it is Seiya Japan. Here is a link to the actual watch:

In my opinion some of he Christopher Ward models, and this one in particular, look very similar to the IWC Portuguese. The Pilot design also looks very similar to an IWC watch.

I would go for a Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic. Available in black/white/silver dials. They are ETA powered and great looking watches.

Anytime I see a watch question, I always chime in with a Christopher Ward suggestion. I've got one and am very happy with it. In fact, I could never see myself paying thousands for a watch when there are so many good CW choices to choose from. So I'll just echo this posters' recommendation.

Similar situation

I also have a TAG 2000 (vintage late 80's) that I gave myself with my first graduate degree. I've always thought about a more dressy watch, and have inherited my Fathers rectangular silver metal, white face (no name) with black leather band that I've worn on occasion. I currently am thinking about a gold tone, with brown alligator strap something-or-other. Being in academia a watch appropriate to business dress is not really an issue as most in this profession are not too sartorially aware and I see lots of plastic runners watches on colleagues.

Thank you and I 100% agree. It really is a terrific watch and a great value. I don't understand why Seiko doesn't make watches like this more readily available in America. If I didn't see somebody suggest this watch to another member a couple of months ago I would've never known it existed.

OK...I know that I will catch a lot of grief from you guys, but I cannot resist. I wanted a gold Rolex day date for decades and finally bought one a few years ago. It never leaves my wrist. I know it is considered a sports watch, (and certainly is not small or sleek) but I wear it with a tux, a suit, or a polo shirt. I have always preferred yellow gold, so my stud sets and links are all yellow gold to match my watch and wedding ring.

Oris makes a great watch, Swiss, automatic. They are also at a great price point..here is one in a leather band. I personally always got for stainless steel watch and band, easier than replacing bands, but they have both kinds available in the Oris lineup:

You can also look at Omega and the Seiko posted looks very nice as well. Good luck...I love nice watches and agree that the IWC watches are really wonderful, but I agree, the price point, unless money is a non issue for you can be a deterrent. I currently own 5 watches, two Oris', one Omega, and two dress watches that I inherited and are magnificent but not great timepieces.

The one I showed was an L4.709.4.73.2, which is the cheaper quartz version:

There are so many similar watches in this range that it is rather confusing as to which one is which and what the differences are :crazy:

Gotta agree...really like the Seiko but just wish I could see it in person here in the US! Very classic style and similar to what Im looking for. The EP Martin is still a bit of an obession of mine, not as classic/trad as the others in this thread though.

Thanks, Guitone. I do like some of the Omega and Seiko watches. The Oris, not really my style but Ill check out more of their line, could be some other solid choices. If only I had the 5-10k needed to acquire an IWC, this thread wouldnt be needed
