Double breasted suit with a vest?

Has anyone seen this? The vest would have to be cut high to be seen over the lapels. It is very rare, but a custom tailor could do it.

I thought I have seen this in some movies like Batman, Johnny Dangerously, etc., but maybe I was mistaking peak lapels for double breasted.

I think it may look interesting either with the jacket buttoned or maybe even, heaven forbid, with the double breasted jacket open?

It certainly would be unique and rare. Likely to get/draw comments of some sort.

I remember Cliff Barns on the TV show Dallas used to wear his double breasted suits unbuttoned and open. For whatever that is worth. Does anyone do that on another note?

Own one, but am not sure why. The crossover point for my DB jackets is so high that the vest is not visible unless the jacket is removed. Not that this doesn't have its charms, as it looks a little more "finished" than lounging about in braces alone.
Sure.

Just keep the DB coat buttoned.
I really, really like this look. As Concordia asserts it does indeed provoide a much more polished look when one's jacket is removed. I may in fact have this style made as my next project......
In the mean time, this handsome chap seems to sport the look rather well I think :
I have 4 suits like this - I love the look, but unless I someplace very cold they are jsut too damn hot for anyplace. I also have prety heavy fabric, so they are really only suited for being outdoors.

but I love the look....
This is one style I don`t really like for myself. In a SB, the vest looks very nice especially with the jacket unbuttoned, but in a DB a vest just seems to get in the way. It doesn`t look so good with the jacket opened or closed to my eye, but that`s just my eye.
Vests

I generally get them for my 6x2's fall and winter suits that have a lower button stance (thereby showing more shirt) As they're made up, they're cut to show 1" to 1 1/2 " above the jacket lapel at the center( one to two buttons). I see no point in having a vest that can't be seen as it follows the jacket lapel line exactly.
Although Manton disagrees with lapels on vests for DB jackets, I'd really like to see one before I kabosh it.(hint, hint)

FWIW, all of my vests for DB jackets are SB w/o lapels.
I love the look myself.

It is preferable to have a waistcoat if you tend to take off your coat indoors. I would say it is almost mandatory if you have trousers cut to wear with braces. You also get to see the waistcoat when you sit down and unbutton the coat.

Got my first one last year. The vest shows one button when the coat is on. I like it, and plan to order another for fall.
I have five suits like this. Like other members, I generally remove my jacket in the office and just feel like I'm more dressed with a vest on. With the coat on, a button shows on some and not on others. Either way is fine by me. One vest does have peak lapels. It does not show at all while the jacket is on, so there's not some riot of lapels confronting the viewer.
This is a great look that hearkens back to the Thirties. I sometimes even do this with a contrasting vest. Were I to have a suit made, the only 'design issue' that I would have would be, how high to cut the vest.

AQG, is that a SB vest? Care to post a picture?
Tim Wannacott - Antiques Roadshow

The epitome of this style has to be the antique expert Tiim Wannacott (sp?) on BBC Antique's Roadshow. More often than not wearing a double breasted suit (open) with hand made waistcoat. Vests are usually double breated with lapels - nice if a little eccentric:idea:
I said: when you sit down. Only when you sit down.

Also what is wrong with unbuttoning a DB coat when sitting especially if you have a waistcoat to hide the braces, shirt etc underneath?
I don`t understand the reaction either. SB and DB should be unbuttoned when seated.

Should be unbuttoned is a little strong. There is nothing wrong with leaving your jacket buttoned while seated. There is a school of thought that believes that if you must unbutton your DB to sit, it doesn't fit.

My point exactly. You shouldn't have to unbutton, although it's an option, I guess.:icon_smile_wink: Sort of lassez faire ?

Nice to learn of different view here. I`ll try to keep it buttoned next time I wear a DB

Without vents, wouldn`t it ruin the shape of the bottom area (backside) of the jacket if you sit on it all the time though?

Doable ( sitting on the jacket) and doesn't cause too much of a problem, but much better with side vents (if I were making a suggestion it'd be against buying ventless DB's for that reason)
