Hi, I'm a new member, although I've been browsing these fora for a while.
I think I read somewhere that you shouldn't wear a single-breasted overcoat over a double-breasted jacket. Is this actually a rule?

IIRC, one should avoid a double breasted overcoat over a double breasted jacket, because it adds so much extra bulk from the extra layers. Single over double and double over single are both fine.

However, I must say that I'm guilty of breaking this rule, I only wear double breasted overcoats, and I wear them over my double breasted jackets.

My SB overcoats tend not to fit well over my DB suits and blazers, so when I wear one of the latter, I wear a DB overcoat. I wouldn't call it a rule, just a question of what's practical in my case.

A DB trench coat looks no more bulky over a properly fitting DB suitcoat than over anything SB.
