Many years ago, I had this incredible longing for a double-breasted Burberry blazer. classic, 3-over-2, peak lapels.

I've gained weight since then, and am starting to get back down to where I can wear it. Would I look foolish if I did? I've always felt a bit Thurston Howell III in it.

I've already got it. I haven't worn it in years, but now that it might fit again, I'm debating whether it's really useful.

That is a very classic garment and Burburry makes quality products. If you are worried about the "formality" of the garment, dress it down with jeans or chinos, and suede shoes or loafers. Avoid red pants, ascots, and french cuffs or you will look like a character from a British television show. A generation ago, my college roommate first showed up on campus in LHSs, khaki pants, rep tie, U-stripe OCBD, and a DB blazer - all from Brooks. I met him as he got off the bus. It was the best entrance I've ever seen anyone make, ever.

I Love DB Blazers

Though I don't have one at present. Press sold DB and SB Burberry blazers as their top-of-line model. I had a SB -- lacked the self-confidence to do the DB in those days. At the time, the DB was favored by the glamorous European and South American jocks -- and some of those boys actually played Polo even if they didn't wear any polo ponies. Americans went for SB models -- darted Burberry 2-button much more than the Fogyish sack.

What I mean is the d-b blazer can be rather formal, almost military in appearance, when worn buttoned up with tie, pocket square, cufflinks, grey flannels, and shiny captoes. It can also look ridiculous with red pants, boat shoes, and ascot (think The Commodore in that episode of "Keeping Up Appearances"). But I think it could be dressed down, or rather dressed downwards, by pairing it with nice jeans (no rips or worn areas), coloured socks, tassel loafers, and a good quality button-down shirt sans tie. One would still be better dressed than 99% of men out there but would avoid looking 'square'.

I haven't owned one since my teens (I liked the peak collar compared to the sb jackets), and although I'm still only 30, I'd wear one again.

Both dressed up or down.

Standard part of my evening wear.....Ive worn DB jackets since high-school (wow, coming up on my 40th High School ReUnion).
In the evening dressed up or down..you stand out...I've taken to wearing my Albert Slippers with them for a night out....jeans or trousers...bright colored socks...the ladies like it!

I confess to a nasty anti-denim prejudice and I do thank the Gods that this remains the only fashion offense that still manages to get someone kicked out of the Yale Club. Besides being ugly, denim is too hot for warm weather and certainly doesn't help much in cold weather -- mocked even in OPH long ago. An even greater sin is that it is SO COMMON -- American Middle-Class Conformity at its worst. There are other working-class fabrics adopted by the gentry that look better and work better: corduroy, moleskin, flannel. And then from the military we have gabardine, whipcord, cotton khaki...

And would it kill you to wear a tie once in a while?

"Square" does not equal bad and "Formal" can actually be a better choice than "Casual" -- particularly as these terms are thrown around today.

One more thing: Shoot for the Stars! Be better-dressed than 99.8% of the ***** out there and if Thurston Howell is not your type, try Fred Astaire, Cary Grant, The Duke of Windsor, and countless others from the not-so-distant past.

I have a DB blazer and had several over the years. To me they are more formal than the SB. Howerver I suggest that you look for one with a military cut. I also have two SB. Look at Dege & Skinners web site and see their ready made blazers.

You needn't worry about me... (for one thing, I use words like "needn't." :icon_smile

I own two pairs of jeans, which I never wear. I painted my garage in chinos.

Miket61: I'm pretty certain, you will not only look good in the DB Burberry blazer but, indeed, you will look fantastic. Congratulations on your weight loss and...get back into that jacket!

PS: Thurston Howell, III, was a great looking dude...sartorially speaking. It was the imperious attitude that did him in! However, what I want to know is, why was he carrying trunks of cash with him on a "three hour cruise"? Was the USS Minnow just an instrument in a money laundering operation? Were Gilligan and the Skipper..."made men!"?

I'd love one, but they have to fit perfectly.

As to DB in general, the best fitting suit I ever saw in real life was a grey one, worn by a 5'4" tall gent. Maybe you just need the right bearing to pull it off!
