Does anyone even ask for those anymore?
I'l have to ask for a "Peter Gunn" next time I go to the barber, just to watch the cloud of mystification descend over his thirty-something head.

The crew cut lives on by a different name, I think (some species of "fade"); possibly flat tops as well (I can't remember by grandfather having anything but a flat top his whole life - a good look for a non-nonsense homicide detective like him!)

Something tells me the "disk jockey contour" was something quite different then than one might expect now.

My old school barber straightens up my flat top every 14 days. Then, I am reclined back, hot towels are placed around my face, and I am treated to a true razor shave. Follow that with a brisk splash of Sea Breeze and you feel like a new man... just a bit poorer.

My late-1970s high school principal wore a flattop, narrow-lapel sack suit, thick black frame glasses, white shirt and skinny tie every day. The guy could not have looked more out of step with the culture in the '70s, but it worked for him. It gave him an air of authority and seriousness that served him well as he was an extremely kind man, but he could wither you with a look that no floppy haired, leisure-suit-wearing principal ever could.

On the other hand, anyone who still has hair should be allowed to do whatever they want with it, so long as it's clean.
I won't go that far. Lately, I have seen far too many females with all manner of neon colors sprayed in their hair. There was a big kerfuffle at my daughter's school when a girl showed up a few weeks ago with green hair. There is nothing in the school handbook that explicitly forbids it and both of her parents are lawyers. She kept the green hair.

Oh, there will be next year.

I think, based on a quick refresher on 1960s tv characters, a "Peter Gunn" is just an ordinary old-fashioned men's haircut. Part it on the left, taper it in the back, a little longer on the top and a little shorter on the sides. Also known as "the usual."
