I'm in my early 30s now. I'm Asian. I use to wear trucker caps/hats when i was 18-19 as it was quite fashionable back then. I have not worn any hats/caps ever since then. Also i have gotten grey hair i notice and i know most people will say its due to age but for me its due to stress and very little sleep.

At the moment, i do not have any hair loss or anything like that as my hair still grows very fast. Im thinking about buying a cap/trucker hat but the reason is due to it looking fashionable... or at least i think they do.

Now what i want to know is this. If you wear trucker caps/hats in general a lot,

1. Can it cause hair loss or not? Also if it matters, my hair is spikey... imagine like Pauly D from the jersey shore without the hair gell etc.

2. Can it cause hair style to change? I recalled when i was 18-19, what i didn't like about wearing hats/caps was everytime i take it off, my hair is a mess. I had the same sort of spikey hair back then as i do now. So everytime i took off my trucker cap, my hair would look like justin bieber when he was young etc. Now what if you had a bald head or a shaved head or like an army haircut style where you don't have hair that is popping out? Does that make any difference?

3. Could it cause more grey hair? I know this sounds like a stupid question but my thinking was when you wear a hat/cap, it puts pressure on your hair and can damage it so to speak?

4. Does anyone here wear hats a lot and if so, effects on your hair? Any greying or balding faster or anything you notice?

5. Thoughts on these trucker caps? Im going to buy one of these. Are these fashionable? I bought the 2nd one back when i was 18 or 19 because i thought it was fashionable. I did recall i washed it once and then the hat was pretty much worn out and i could barely fit it perfectly in my head because of the quality. If you had to get one of these, which would you choose? The 2nd one i like as i bought that a long time ago. But the 1st one looks a bit good as well? Obviously it says farming on it... and well i do none of that. So the hat is like a fashion hat etc.

I’m not sure wearing hats will lead to graying or baldness. I constantly wore hats as a kid playing sports and at 45 still have a full head of hair. I have some gray hairs but that’s because I’m 45.

As far as the hats, the only people I’ve seen wear those in the US are farmers. And truckers. If that’s the fashion statement you want to make, that’s your hat.

I find your concern reasonable and your question(s) well put. I never wore any sort of hat or cap until about ten years ago. Now I always wear one outside (or upstairs in winter.) Have not noticed any adverse effects. However, my hair was without color prior to my hat wearing.

Cannot address the fashon side of this because you're not a white guy with a few score years behind him, so my input here is marginal. However, my otherwise intelligent even-older-than-me brother recently purchased a sweat shirt with "Boston College" emblazoned on the front. He has never gone to Boston College or to my knowledge, even Boston. Get my drift here?

If you wear a cap, then with time your hair will thin. Id you do not wear a cap, then with time your hair will thin.

I wear caps all the time with Logos from golf courses I’ve played, never from ones I have not visited. Only when playing golf.

I have a ball cap with my hospital’s name on it. I wear it once a year to our Medical Staff Softball game.

I have a Yankees cap, that i wear to Yankees games. I have a Yankees cap that I wear to Mets games. I have a Yankees cap that I have worn in Boston to a Red Socks game and lived to tell about it.

I have even worn a Devil’s jersey to a hockey game in Madison Square Garden, because after all, as everyone knows, RANGERS SUCK!!!

Get the idea?

Sorry to disappoint you, but stress does not cause grey hair. It's primarily genetic, though I'm sure some obscure disease might also cause it, and I can't swear that some odd nutritional intake couldn't also encourage it.

It can be a recessive gene in one's family. I had 3 siblings, none of whom greyed prematurely, whereas I began accumulating grey at 18 in a slow process until I reached roughly 35 when the process was complete, which for me is around 3/4 white hairs to 1/4 black. When my youngest daughter began greying in exactly the same way at the same age, her observation was "Thanks Dad!!" But her older sister has not shared her good fortune! ;)

1. Wearing hats will not cause hair loss, unless you set them on fire.

2. Yes, wearing a hat can mess up your hair. This is known as Hat Head. Is this a serious question?

3. No, and you're right about the nature of the question.

4. I wear hats, but I don't have a particularly long or elaborate hair style. It can flatten the hair slightly. If that bothers me, I can re-comb it. But obviously if the top of your head more closely resembles a hedgehog, placing any object, be it a hat, an anvil or a bull moose on your head may flatten some of the spikes. But while it may be flatter, it wont be any greyer.
5. Thoughts on trucker caps!? Unless you're a trucker, you'll look like a dork. Some people like that.

I will disagree with the stress does not cause grey hair. I agree lot of it is due to genetics. But if you are stressed all the time, you really don't think this will have any effect on your hair? Many people have said they notice their hair got grey because of the stress etc. Also this is like people saying food does not cause acne such as dairy does not cause acne when many ppl notice once they stop eating dairy, their acne is not that bad anymore.

You know, you're right! Why should anyone may any attention to genetic and medical research when they can instead be guided by what "many people have said." :teacha:

You raise some interesting epistemological questions for which I have no answers. There is certainly a correlation between people who wear hats and people who are bald, but which causes which?

I once asked a dermatologist if wearing hats causes hair loss, and she tried to sell me something called Propecia (?), which I declined. If you are of a certain age and wear a hat people are likely to assume you are bald.

I’ve worn hats (cowboy and fedoras) a lot over the years and my hair is doing fine (i.e., it is still there and has. it turned gray), whereas my beard is pretty much all grey.

If stress caused hair loss or gray hair, it would have happened to me by now.

There’s a lot to be said for hearing a hat for protection from the sun. A baseball cap (trucker cap?) is not the best for this purpose.

There is no empirical evidence linking the wearing of hats or caps to baldness or graying hair.

So wear a hat if you wish. As to the style, it’s based on your taste.

I don’t wear hats. Personally, I don't care for trucker caps. If I’m going to wear one, I’d rather it be a baseball cap.

Hey, I don't think wearing hats can cause hair fall or baldness or grey hair. Maybe it's because of the oil you use or not using at all. Water can be the reason for your hair turning grey if it's hard water. Don't worry, just concentrate on your diet and health. Take protein rich food and exercise regularly.

I would recommend against giving dietary advice given you know nothing of the OP's health or medical history. Furthermore, just a guess but I'm willing to bet you're not remotely qualified to do so.

A protein rich diet for some individuals can lead to serious health complications.

Yeah, you are right, I don't know much about proteins but it is obvious that you will not eat something that you are allergic to or don't like it and you shouldn't. I was just giving general advice on taking a proper diet, that's all.

A proper diet is a relative term. Relative to a persons overall medical history and any conditions he may have.

Sorry....I'm not trying to offend. I just get a visceral reaction when people offer medical opinions online.

Member momsdoc has responded to your inquiry just about as accurately and eloquently as you are going to get and I would not presume to add to his response. However, to the OP, I will say that while greying and/or thinning hair are an inescapable realities for me, but I do not agonize and/or stress over either one. A reality that does concern the hell out of me is skin cancer... Just, be smart and wear a hat! :teacha:

PS: Just what is considered to be a Truckers Hat? :icon_scratch:
