I was at a medical seminar this weekend attended by about 1000. The conference was on wound care, and although there were some wound care nurses present, the majority of attendees were from varying medical specialties including general surgeons, vascular surgeons, podiatrists, orthopedists, dermatologists, etc.

Although there were many doctors wearing relatively "classic" combos of blue blazers/OCBD's/khakis/loafers which I consider appropriate for a weekend seminar, some of the other outfits were beyond description.

I saw 3 piece suits worn with Dansko clogs, I saw short sleeve shirts with epaulettes on the shoulders being worn with "novelty" ties, cordouroy pants with beat up sneakers, denim jackets with "dress" slacks, black shirts with white ties, and every combination imaginable.

Naturally, there were a fair share of docs wearing khakis or similar casual wear and looking appropriate, but some of the combos were pretty scary. And I can assure you that it wasn't due to a lack of available finances.

The room was filled with a lot of extremely bright and extremely pleasant doctors, but very few were ever going to "dress to impress", so I'm thankful that they are blessed with other skills!

My guess is that doctors never want to dress nicely for work, since blood, vomit, or some other bodily fluid could get all over their clothes, and anyway they'll be wearing a lab coat over everything. Over time, the sartorial parts of their brains atrophy, until they are incapable of dressing themselves non-hideously.

Just goes to show that simply being mentally bright is not the samething as being wise.

I disagree , doctors dress no better or worst than any other perfession. There are businessmen who dress poorly as well . Most young Americans today
using the standards here on Ask Andy are very poor dressers.

I was under the impression that men had style women fashion. There are some doctors
that dress very well. you can visit any semiar or conference here in America and the majority of the people there will be poorly dressed.

Is a man who wears jeans and a suit coat poorly dressed ? I would think that a man in a blazer and khaki's is better dressed.

I see the point about not wanting to dress that well for work, but given that this was a seminar where body fluids are very unlikely to occur, there's little excuse.

How about that plastic surgeon from the E! channel? He's supposed to be dressed like he cares about the way he looks, but his clothes are just gaudy.

Yes. What does a bad windowpane suit or matching tie and pocket square have to do with surgery skills? Better yet, who besides us really gives a damn?

Surely this is just costume for the purpose of TV?
That's what I was thinking. He wants rich ladies to avail themselves of his services. So at functions or on TV he has to dress as loud as he can in a way that will attract the bait.

He's dressed for "fishing." Wait a minute. He is the bait.

As for doctors in general, they tend to dress to match their bedside manner. I would prefer a doc who dresses in a down manner that listens to me, rather than a guy who is invovled with only himself.

But he's a plastic surgeon. For a cosmetic procedure, you'd want someone with a good sense of aesthetics.
Sir, you are trying very hard to associate disparate elements of somebody's personality with each other. Just because he dresses terribly doesn't mean he won't know what looks good on the human body. Architects generally aren't the best dressed people either. You would still trust them to design a great looking building. Or an artist -- not many of them are dressed well at all -- to paint a beautiful picture. Personal aesthetics in one area is not really a good indicator of it in every subject.
