I dropped in at the new Crockett & Jones concession at Turnbull & Asser on 57th Street, which opened Monday.

The shop is small, but attractively outfitted, with the furniture left over from the days when the fourth floor was the bespoke shirt department, and has a display case featuring several pairs of museum-quality shoes from the 1920's (Jcusey would be enthralled). The directorix is the same woman who ran the shoe department at Polo on 72d Street, and is very helpful and knowledgeable -- she just got back from a tour of the Northampton factory and insisted on telling me all about it. They have about forty types of shoes and boots on display, with more on the way, and feature the entire handgrade line, plus a few models typically not seen outside Crockett's Jermyn Street and Burlington Arcade locations.

The prices are more than what one would pay on Pediwear or at Bodiley's, but then again, the latter aren't forking over 57th Street rent or punitive NYC taxes. I bought a pair of the brown suede Belgrave handgrades, which are only available at Turnbull and in Crockett's Londonlocations -- they would apparently like to have a few things unavailable at other retailers in town.

Overall, it's a nice setup.

I went up to the fourth floor of T&A, not realizing they had a C&J company ministore there, the only one in the US. As rubicon mentioned, Cindy the manager knows her shoes, having been the manager and chief trainer of the shoe department at the Polo mansion.

Prices were $500 for the regular grade, a bit less for suede, either $625 or 650 for the handgrade I forget. Shipping was $20 for shoes with no tax for out of state, $10 for each extra pair to ship, more or less. They had plenty of styles but will order anything in the catalog. They take C&J's for refurbishing, $200 a pair.

I wish there were goodies on sale but I did get the shoes I'd always wanted with the fit I wanted, few compromises, so it was money well spent. At least as well spent as it can be for expensive shoes!

Maybe higher than Ben Silver or Pediwear, I don't know, but I was very glad I got fitted and saw each model on me before I bought. No other salesman has taken the time to fit me right nor explain what kinds of shoes would work best with my feet and why.

How do benchgrades compare to Alden in quality?
They appear to be similar in quality of materials and of construction, although I haven't worn any C&J Benchgrades and so wouldn't know for sure. Many of the styles and the lasts are different from what you'd see from Alden, though.
