Deer bones for shell. Amazing that otherwise smart consumers fall for this iGent goofiness.
Do you think they just don't do anything for shell? I haven't tried them on shell, but people have been using deer bones to polish wax calf riding/hunting boots for quite some time, so the idea certainly isn't new. Most companies that make wax calf boots also sell deer bones with them. I suspect if you dug around you could find 19th century references to using deer bone on wax calf.

John Lobb use and sell them, especially for waxed calf boots and shoes. They are also used for cordovan.

I bought a deer bone at Leffot to try on my shell. There's a learning curve, but it does work well for smoothing out scratches. If you overdo it, you can darken the color of the leather. But honestly, a spoon would probably work almost as well.
