I think a dark suit is fine. In my opinion, the catholic church has always been reasonably lax in dress code which I always have found kind of relaxing. Just don't wear your best tie...

My experiences in US churches (full disclosure, I'm Catholic, and in fact employed by same) have been that the dress code, written or unwritten, is quite a bit more lax in Catholic churches, and not just because I live in a college town. In big cities and small towns, I've found Catholic churches to have parishioners dressed is largely casual clothing, the relatively consistent (but not always) exception being ushers and other lay people participating in the mass.
